Welcome to COMM 1307:090: Introduction to Mass Communications

Please Note: The course website is being updated for the just released 3rd edition of our text book, so you will notice a few design or illustration changes as we go along. All of the fundamental features, however, are complete and will not change. I trust that you will enjoy the course and please feel free to ask any questions through the email function or "Open" section of the Bulletin Board within the course. Above all "Welcome." After Reading the material on this page, be absolutely certain to read in their entirety ALL of the material under the links below. Failure to do so will likely result in failure to complete the course properly!

YOU ARE REQUIRED TO READ FULLY: ALL OF THE FOLLOWING ESSENTIAL INFORMATION about Downloading Time(s), Computer Requirements, Media Files and follow the link to Course Requirements at the bottom of this list in order to take this course: (Purely technical questions should be directed to the SAC online help desk, your computer manufacturer or documentation and internet provider as appropriate.)

  • Email questions to the Instructor (through WebCT ONLY) will be answered under normal circumstances on weekdays within 24 hours.
  • This is a MULTI-MEDIA COURSE and requires the installation of apple's latest and free (Quicktime Player 6 or later.) You can just click on this link to go to apple's download site. No previous version will work with MP4 files.
  • WARNING: For those who must use a Dial-Up modem exclusively, I would NOT advise taking this course without GREAT patience. Downloading even these highly compressed files will often require fifteen to thirty minutes (and possibly longer) with 56K modem technology and if you are using a computer with insufficient RAM, your computer may freeze. I would STRONGLY recommend viewing multi-media material only when you are at a broadband equipped station, such as those on campus.
  • To ease the problems above, multi-media files may be removed one full week after the scheduled conclusion of their respective chapters.
  • Autoplay has been turned off for all downloading media files because of download times. You will typically need to click on the start button when they are ready to be played.
  • If you aren't able to use DSL, Cable or LAN connections when you choose to view these clips, I'd recommend opening a multi-media page and either procede to read the course text while the film or audio clip is loading or undertake other tasks. Otherwise, based on my own experience, you will find yourself subject to great frustration. Leave the computer, come back and click play on the control bar below the image. If for any reason no control bar appears, double click on the image itself. Once played, you can decide whether to play it again or not.
  • Since the clips are basic to important class discussions, I'd strongly recommend viewing them at least twice and taking notes. They are necessarily short in duration due to copyright restrictions on fair-use. All are for use only within the context of this court and must be deleted at the end of the term.
  • At this time, I would also recommend using Microsoft's Internet Explorer as a browser if you use dial-up. Use the latest version compatible with your computer operating system. IE most likely came with your computer, but you may need an update from (www.microsoft.com)
  • If, by chance, the WebCT server is down when a deadline is due, You can submit your Bulletin Board Discussion contribution as an email or email attachment. Do this only in that event, since students in the class all benefit from seeing the contributions of other participants.
  • Now Return to the Links at the top of this page.
