MUSB 1305 - Survey of the music business

Catalog Description: This course is an overview of the music industry including songwriting, live performance, industry, music merchandising, contracts and licenses, and career opportunities. Syllabus

MUSB 1341 - CONCERT PROMOTION and VENUE MANAGEMENT

This is a course in the basics of concert promotion and venue management including considerations in purchasing a club, concert promotion and advertising, talent buying, city codes, insurance, Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission Regulation, performance rights organization licenses, personnel management, and concert production and administration. MUSB 2305 - MUSIC PUBLISHING

This course is a study of the administrative and marketing aspects of music publishing including the application of current copyright law, developing songwriters, rights exploration, and royalty collection. Syllabus

MUSB 2309 - THE RECORD INDUSTRY

This course is a study of the history of the record industry and the organization of large and small record companies. Topics include record company functions such as artist and repertoire (A&R), promotion, marketing, business affairs, and administration and distribution including Internet-based distribution. MUSB 2345 - LIVE MUSIC AND TALENT MANAGEMENT

This course is an examination of the role, scope and activities of the talent manager including establishing the artist/manager relationship; planning the artist’s career; and developing goals, strategies, and tactics with an overall view of the live music business. Syllabus

MUSB 2355 - LEGAL ASPECTS OF THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY

“Legal Aspects” offers an online introduction to First Amendment court cases on musical expression, copyright law and the various agreements used in the entertainment industry. Using an extensive multi-media web-based curriculum and resource materials, the course emphasizes contracts, transactions and business models used by music publishers, record companies, artist managers, record producers, film and television producers, booking agencies and internet music service providers.

Students can earn up to 25% of the final grade by using their legal education to contribute content to an online music law blog developed specifically for this course, and by researching and developing a Music Service Incubator Project,” such as an independent or online music production or distribution project. The students perform these service projects in association with selected community partner organizations, such as KSYM-FM, Courtland Records, and the American Society of Composers Authors and Publishers.

At the conclusion of the semester, students report the results of their service projects on the online music law blog, or at an annual symposium event to be convened during the Spring semester, or both. Syllabus

MUSB 2380 - COOPERATIVE EDUCATION – MUSIC MANAGEMENT AND MERCHANDISING

This course offers career-related activities encountered in the student’s area of specialization offered through an individualized agreement among the college, employer, and student. Under the supervision of the college and the employer, the student combines classroom learning with work experience. This courses includes a lecture component. Syllabus

MUSB 2386 - INTERNSHIP – MUSIC MANAGEMENT AND MERCHANDISING

A work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills and concepts. A learning plan is developed by the college and the employer. Syllabus
