All faculty are expected to be involved in departmental committee work which is vital to the conduct, planning and growth of a department. See also Guidelines Relative to the Position of Department Chairperson.   [ ACCD Procedures ]

• Curriculum Development

  One of the most important departmental functions deals with curriculum development. All departments have a Curriculum Review and Evaluation Committee which continually evaluates curriculum, proposes new courses, and revises existing courses both in content and delivery. New courses and changes of course descriptions are submitted to the College Curriculum Review and Evaluation Committee for approval and then to the College Academic Council for formal adoption

• Departmental Committees

  All academic departments maintain a number of standing committees. These include Peer Evaluation, Promotions and Tenure. These committees revolve around peer review, classroom observations and various other guidelines to be attained for promotion and tenure.

  The Planning and Program Review Committee involves departmental work towards achieving college and departmental goals and objectives. Additional committees may occur as needed.

• Faculty Senate - The Faculty Senate presents faculty views and makes recommendations regarding college policies and procedures to the President of San Antonio College, the Alamo Community College District Administration, and the ACCD Board of Trustees. It also appoints faculty representatives to the College and District governance committees. ( See Appointments to College Wide Committees for a listing of these committees.) The Senate consists of 24 members with 8 seats being elected in April of each year. Faculty members who have completed six long-term semesters are eligible for election to the Faculty Senate.

• Participatory Governance Structure

• College-Wide Committees - Selection to these committees typically occurs from the College President or the Senate Chair.

  • Elected Committees - Two committees, the Promotion Appeals Committee and the Tenured Faculty Hearing Committee, are elected by the faculty at large.

  • Other College-Wide Committees
    • Campus Smoking Policy - prepares recommendations relative to smoking and proximity to buildings throughout the campus.
    • Master Plan - conducts hearings and makes recommendations relative to the construction of new buildings on campus.
    • Outstanding Former Student Committee - screens nominations and makes recommendations relative to selecting the annual Outstanding Former Student Award.

• Faculty Student Organization Sponsorship

  Faculty members are encouraged to serve as student organization advisors. These uniquely rewarding opportunities contribute to the development of leadership traits for students as well as service opportunities to the college and community.
