Biographical Information
He received the Associate in Science degree from Southwest Texas Junior College in Uvalde, Texas, and the Bachelor of Science degree from Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. In both cases, the major was Physical Education and the minor was English. The Master of Arts degree in Counseling and Guidance was conferred by St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas. Throughout his career, Mr. Flores has been elected to serve as officer in several state, regional and national organizations that focus on student academic success, personal development and pupil-support services. He has authored and submitted many documents and has made numerous presentations at various local, state, regional and national forums. Most have dealt with student concerns, worker rights, equal employment opportunities, minority-populations issues, education funding, teaching/learning strategies, remedial education and comprehensive systems for the delivery of student-support. Numerous entities have acknowledged Mr. Flores’ contributions to efforts directed at betterment for students, workers, community, workplace and education. Among some recognitions are: Kellogg Foundation Fellowship - Education Policy Fellowship Program awarded by the Institute For Educational Leadership in Washington, DC; Pioneer of the Past Award, Special TRIO Award, Outstanding Service Award and Professional Contribution Award awarded by the Texas Association of Student Special Services Programs; Professional Commitment Award and Certificate of Leadership awarded by the Southwest Association of Student Assistance Programs; Exemplary Service Award and Lifetime Achievement Award awarded by the San Antonio Chapter of the Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education; Distinguished Service Award awarded by the Committee for Excellence in Higher Education in San Antonio; Who’s Who Recognition awarded by Personalities of the South; Devoted and Unselfish Service Award awarded by the Gary Employees Association - Gary Job Corps Center; Spirit of Giving Award awarded by the San Antonio College Young Women’s/Young Men’s Conference; Dedication to TACHE Award awarded by the Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education; and the Star Award awarded by the Hispanic Border Leadership Institute located at Arizona State University. In support of the principle of shared governance here at SAC, Mr. Flores has productively participated as member of the Academic Council, the Retention Task Force, the Faculty Recruitment Task Force, the Structure Advisory Task Force, the Focus Group for development and implementation of the Institute For Community Initiatives, the Registration Feedback Group, the Strategic Enrollment Management Steering Committee, and the Access and Equity Committee. Manuel L. Flores considers his ordination as Elder at Church On The Rock to be an undeserved special privilege as well as an invaluable opportunity to serve.
