MISSION STATEMENT

"The department shall provide instruction in Sociology, Anthropology, Gerontology, Interdisciplinary Studies, and Social Work for students in our community who are interested in enhancing their job skills or in preparing to earn an academic degree. The department offers an approach to learning based on the social sciences and emphasizes instruction that address student, business, industry and community needs. Courses are designed to provide knowledge and techniques for understanding how social relationships and social structures influence human behavior."

In keeping with the Mission Statement of San Antonio College and the Vision Statement of the Alamo Community College District, the GOALS of this department are to provide the following:

1. Transfer level courses for students who are pursuing an Associate of Arts Degree, or who otherwise are planning to transfer to a four-year college or university, such as a 2 + 2 program;

2. Courses which meet the requirements for certificates in Gerontology;

3. Courses in support of other departments and programs at San Antonio College;

4. Multi-cultural learning opportunities such as courses with an "Internationalized Curriculum" and/or an emphasis on the "Mexican-American Experience";

5. Curricula, including selection of textbooks, that promote global awareness in all courses;

6. Service-Learning opportunities in many courses and sections which encourage civic and community responsibility;

7. Interdisciplinary Studies courses to provide for teacher's certification;

8. Innovative approaches to pedogogy to strengthen critical thinking skills, to promote active and collaborative learning, and to aid communication proficiency;

9. Alternative class offerings via Videocourses and the Internet for students with irregular schedules;

10. The utilization of new and emerging technologies such as multi-media instructional aids that address the diverse learning styles of the college's multicultural student population;

11. Student support through specialized counseling and through academic planning for students pursuing careers in Sociology, Anthropology, Gerontology, Social Work, or Interdisciplinary Studies;

12. An environment that fosters the professional and personal development of faculty and staff.
