Appeals Update...

Send out on SACALL on Friday, August 28, 2009

To San Antonio College Staff Employees:

The Staff Council Presidents of all the colleges met this afternoon with Linda Boyer-Owens, the Associate Vice Chancellor of Employee Services, about several items.

APPEALS. If you filed an appeal of the compression/compensation study done by Fox Lawson and your pay Is being adjusted, it is retroactive to Sept. 1, 2008.  That total amount is included in the paycheck you will receive on Monday, Aug. 31.  The amount is already available on your paystub available through PALS.  Appropriate taxes have been held out.

A letter was mailed on Thursday to the home address of all 171 people who appealed.  It includes a page that specifically explains your situation.  If you were denied extra funds, that was  explained.  Your supervisor will be receiving a copy of the letter via the pony.

Of the 171 employees who appealed, all of them met with Dr. Werling, the compensation specialist hired to issue a final determination.  There is no more appeal within the District framework.  Thirty-five employees received pay adjustments.

Six job classifications received pay adjustments:
Admissions Clerk II
Market Specialist
Director of Public Relations
Media Specialist
Technology Support Supervisor
Coordinator of Occupational Programs.

Seven more received compression adjustment corrections because they were not given the appropriate years of credit in the compression.

There are still people who did not file appeals but are affected by the adjustments that were made, and they are being identified by Human Resources.

EARLY RETIREMENT.  The Board of Trustees will be asked to consider an Early Retirement Proposal at its September meeting.  It is still in draft form, but it essentially allows people to retire using the same requirements as for any early retirement.  After one calendar month, they can return to work for the Alamo Colleges as a part-time employee (less than 50%) but keep the current rate of pay.  The number of years that part-time employment could continue has not been determined.  It would allow a department that is losing a position to phase it out because the incumbent would be there part-time.  More details will become available as the proposal is prepared for the Board.

Thank you,
