I.         Catalog Description:    Advanced Acting is an advanced course where the student will investigate the nature of acting and the nature of their mental,   psychological, and physical    processes.  This course will give students the     opportunity to study a wide range of scenes from both classical and contemporary literature. The main consideration of this class will be acting styles.  A major portion of time will spent exploring the acting process through class             exercises, and performances.  YOUR PARTICIPATION IS CRTICAL!!!

II.        Required Background: Acting I-1351 or permission of the Instructor

III.      Text: No assigned text.  Student agrees to do all assigned readings and reserve                  library  readings.   Moderate amount of Dramatic Literature and Theatrical Literature.

IV.       Methods of Instruction: Any or all of the following: class lecture, class             
            discussion, small group exercises and classroom performances and laboratory.

V.        Course Content:
            A. Much of the work in class will involve monologue and scene work taken from   all areas of dramatic literature.  Theatrical readings and class exercises emphasize the inter-dependence of actor with other actors and the script. Lab work and rehearsal time will be used to integrate theories and methods.  PERFORMANCE  WILL BE AN INTEGRAL AND FREQUENT PART OF THIS CLASS.  ALL PERFORMANCES MUST BE MEMORIZED AND POLISHED.   (THAT IS, OPENING NIGHT QUALITY!) When selecting material for performance you will be responsible for reading the entire script and for copying monologue or scene choices and submitting these to the instructor.  Students, as    well as the instructor, will supply critiques immediately following class performances.  Note taking is encouraged and expected!!  To successfully complete this course the student will need to demonstrate a mastery of proper theatrical terms, analyzing dramatic literature, researching and understanding styles of characterization, monologue and dialogue memorization and   performance, and analyzing theatrical productions. The student will attend at least two theatrical productions, write a production critique, perform both a monologue performance examination and a final performance examination and complete 15 laboratory practicum hours outside of class. 

            B. Criteria for each assignment will be handed to the student who will be graded   on how accurately they follow the criteria.  Failure to follow the criteria can mean a lower grade. 

            C. Character analysis will be due for each performance. The analysis will be collected on the day the student is to perform, must be typed and will be graded.

VI.  Learning Outcomes:

  A.  Learning Outcome 1:  The student will attend and analyze two live                                           theatrical productions following guidelines and criteria given in class.
       Performance Objective/Methods of Measurement:
                              1.  The student will attend two live theatrical production during the
                                   semester in which they are enrolled.
                              2.  The student will demonstrate a thorough understanding of play 
                                   structure using Aristotle’s components of order and                                                              organization to write two production critiques from the                                                       productions viewed during the semester.

      B.  Learning Outcome 2:  The student will be responsible for researching styles                                        of characterization from both contemporary and classical dramatic                                                 literature.
                  Performance Objective/Method of Measurement:
                              1The student will be evaluated on the ability to find, analyze,
                                   and conceptualize styles of characterization from both                                                          contemporary and classical literature.
                              2.  The student will engage in critical thinking skills by selecting
                                   characters from certain styles and periods of literature and                                                   mastering the ability to bring these characters to life onstage.
                              3.  The student also uses critical thinking skills through                                                               categorization, clarification, analysis, and explanation during                                               in class discussions and rehearsals

      C.  Learning Outcome 3: The student will perform a series of memorized                                           monologues chosen from researching dramatic literature. 
                  Performance Objective/Method of Measurement:
                              1.  The student will perform a series of monologues following                                                   specific guidelines in front of a live audience.
                              2.  The student will be evaluated by the instructor and fellow class
                                   members on their ability to create and perform a series of                                                    distinct and believable characters using guidelines given in                                                 class.

      D.  Learning Outcome 4:  The student actors will perform classical monologues                                       or dialogues chosen from researching appropriate classical                                                  literature.
                  Performance Objective/Method of Measurement:
                              1.  The student will perform a memorized monologue or dialogue                                             from classical literature as part of the course requirements for                                              this class.
                              2.  The student will demonstrate an understanding of the characters
                                   being performed by writing a character analysis for each                                                      character they perform.
                              3.   The student will be evaluated by the instructor and fellow class
                                    members on their ability to create and perform a dialogue using
                                    basic techniques of characterization such as timing, connection,
                                    memorization, concentration and conviction.

      E.  Learning Outcome 5:  The student will research contemporary and classical dramatic literature with the purpose of finding characters who  meet certain human conditions and situations.
1.  The student will be tested on their ability to find and relate human conditions and experiences discussed in class to characters from contemporary and classical literature.                                   
2.  The student will use incorporate their research into live performances critiqued by the instructor and fellow class  members.

      F.  Learning Outcome 6: The student will be responsible for completing 15                                        hours of laboratory practicum time during the semester.
                              1.  The student will be evaluated on their ability to incorporate                                                 class.
                                   room knowledge with hands on training.
                              2.  The student will keep a time sheet detailing all hours spent
                                   outside of class.

VII.  Course Requirements and Grade Computation

    1. College Requirements: A written, comprehensive final examination, not to exceed two and half hours in length, shall be given at the end of each semester for each course at the regularly scheduled time.  Any exceptions to these requirements must be approved by the dean.  Other examinations are given at the discretion of the instructor.

A student who must be absent from a final examination should petition that instructor for permission to postpone the examination.  A student absent without permission from a final examination is graded “F”.  Postponed examinations result in a grade of incomplete.  The final exam must be taken within 120 calendar days from the end of the semester or the grade automatically becomes an “F”.  (SAC Bulletin)

    1. Departmental Requirements: The student is responsible for contacting the instructor to complete a recorded “I” grade. Any student in any theatre course is required by complete AT LEAST fifteen hours of laboratory outside of scheduled class.

C.     Instructor Requirements: Attendance: Advanced Acting is a skills oriented class. Much emphasis is spent on exercises and in class performance.  Since this work cannot be made up, it is imperative that you attend every class.  You will be allowed three unexcused absences.  If you     are absent more than three times you will be asked to drop this course.  It is your responsibility to drop yourself if you have exceeded the allotted absences allowed.  The instructor will not drop you from this course.  If  the forth absence occurs after the drop date you will receive an F in this   course. PLAN ON BEING HERE, AND ON TIME FOR EVERY CLASS.  
                
D.   Grade Breakdown of Assignments:
                        Your final grade will be based on the following:

                                1.  Close/Stretch Monologue                             15%
                                2.  Classical Monologue/Dialogue                    20%
                                3.  Production Critique                                        15%
                                4.  Dialogue Performance                                  15%
                                5.  Laboratory Practicum                                   10%
                                6.  Final Acting Project                                       20%       
                                7.  Attendance                                                        5%

 E.    Assignment Policy/Performance Quality:   PERFORMANCE WILL BE AN INTEGRAL AND FREQUENT PART OF THIS CLASS.  All assignments and work presented in and to this class must be polished and well prepared.  All scenes and monologue choices must be memorized and stage decisions very evident.  You will be treated like a professional, expect to grow and be challenged with every performance in class.  Please do not waste your time or class time.  Take your work seriously and remember your initial commitment when you enrolled in this acting class.  Written   assignments are due on the date indicated.  Do not turn in assignments late. You will not be allowed to make up performances if you are absent, so plan on being here. Severe penalties   exist for late papers and assignments.  No papers are accepted if they do not conform to the standards given in class.  Plan your schedule and semester carefully so that this is not a problem!!!  All assignments and work presented in and to this class must be polished and well prepared.  All scenes and monologues must be memorized and stage decisions very evident.  You are also expected to prepare adequately by reading text material and other handouts as well as, being a good audience member. Your grade will be lowered considerably if you fail to follow instructions.

5.  Both the mid-term, and final examinations and performances must be given to receive any grade in this class.  Failure to take the mid-term or final exams or performances will result in a grade of "F." 

Any student participating in a departmental production in any capacity is eligible for extra credit.  Please see me if this is something you are interested in.

The class is designed to provide the advanced student with a firm basis for taking this art seriously.  You will be expected to work hard and to earn the confidence in yourself that this discipline inevitably demands.  The function of the instructor will be to present challenges and opportunities and to stimulate the creation of the character.  Vow to work hard and give yourself over to this experience.  Your art demands it!

G.  San Antonio College Attendance Policy: Regular and punctual attendance at all classes and laboratories, day/and evenings, is required. A student absent for any reason is responsible for all work missed. Both tardiness and early departure from class are forms of absenteeism. The instructor establishes the policy with regard to each.
