I. Catalogue Description: This course is a study of basic theatre practices with emphasis on lighting and instrumentation. It includes elements, style, and basic principles of scenic design and basic scenic design projects. Participation in college theatre production is required.
II. Pre-requisites, co-requisites and other requirements: Stagecraft 1 or evidence of technical theatre experience pre-approved by the instructor.
III. Text: Theatrical Design and Production (5th Edition) by J. Michael Gillette
IV. Instruction will consist of: lectures, class discussions, class demonstrations and practical application of all basic stagecraft techniques.

VI. Learning Outcomes:
A. Learning Outcome 1: The student will be able to execute a scenic design for a theatrical production.
Performance Objectives / Methods of Measurement:
- The student will demonstrate a basic understanding of the scenic requirements of a play on a unit project.
- The student will either render or model a scenic design on a unit project.
- The student will justify scenic design choices in a presentation of a unit project.
B. Learning Outcome 2: The student will be able to execute lighting for a theatrical production.
Performance Objectives / Methods of Measurement:
- The student will be able to identify the functions and properties of stage lighting on a written exam.
- The student will be able to describe and identify the components of a stage lighting system and describe how the components interact and function on a written exam.
- The student will be able to identify and label the types of stage lighting instruments and their parts and how they function on a written exam.
- The student will be able to read and generate a theatrical lighting plot and all supporting paperwork on a unit project.
- The student will be able to hang, circuit, and focus stage lighting instruments both in general and according to a specific light plot on a laboratory practicum.
C. Learning Objective 3: The student will be able to execute sound for a theatrical production.
Performance Objectives / Methods of Measurement:
- The student will be able to identify the basic components and functions of a theatrical sound system on a written exam.
- The student will be able to operate the departmental sound system on a laboratory practicum.
- The student will be able to choose appropriate pre recorded sounds for a fictitious theatrical production on a unit project.
D. Learning Objective 4: The student will be able to demonstrate basic stage costuming skills.
Performance Objectives / Methods of Measurement:
- The student will be able to demonstrate basic sewing skills on a laboratory practicum.
- The student will be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of the costume requirements of a play on a unit project.
VII. Course Requirements and Grade Computation:
A. College Requirements:
- A written comprehensive final examination, not to exceed three hours in length, shall be given at the end of each semester for each course at the regularly scheduled time. Any exceptions to these requirements must be approved by the appropriate dean. Other examinations are given at the discretion of the instructor.
- A student who must be absent from a final examination should petition that instructor for permission to postpone the examination. A student absent without permission from a final examination is graded “F.” Postponed examinations result in a grade of “I.” The final exam must be taken within 120 calendar days from the end or the semester or the grade automatically becomes an “F.” (San Antonio College Bulletin, Faculty Handbook – January, 1995)
B. Departmental Requirement:
- A student in any theatre course is required to complete AT LEAST fifteen (15) laboratory hours outside of scheduled class time engaged in departmental production activities.
C. Instructor Requirements:
- All students are expected to fully participate in all class discussions and activities. Any behavior that is disruptive to instruction or general classroom decorum will not be tolerated.
- Being late to class or leaving early is both considered a form of absenteeism. If a student comes to class 15 minutes after it has begun or leaves 15 minutes before class is over, it is recorded as an absence. If a student comes to class 1-14 minutes after it has begun or leaves 1-14 minutes before class is over, it is recorded as a partial absence. Two partial absences will be equivalent to one official absence. (See College Attendance Policies below)

VIII. College Policies:

E. Academic Dishonesty: Students may be subject to disciplinary proceedings resulting in an academic penalty or disciplinary penalty for academic dishonesty. Academic Dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, cheating on a test, plagiarism and collusion. F. Students are required to silence all electronic devices (e.g. pagers, cellular phones, etc.) when in classrooms, laboratories and the library. (College Academic Council – January, 2000)
G. San Antonio College Attendance Policy: Regular and punctual attendance at all classes and laboratories, day and/or evening, is required. A student absent for any reason is responsible for all work missed. Both tardiness and early departure from class are forms of absenteeism. The instructor establishes a policy with regard to each. (see Instructor Requirements above) Absences of each student are recorded without exception. The counting of absences begins on the first day of class. A student absent the equivalent of two weeks of instruction in a 16-week semester class may be dropped by the instructor. If a student is dropped from a class for excessive absences, the instructor will record a grade of “W” (withdraw). It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that the withdrawals have been submitted.
