I.             Catalog Description:
 This course employs the principles and techniques involved in the analysis and oral performance
of standard literary forms.  It is recommended for elementary education, speech, drama, and         English majors preparing to teach literature.

II.            Required Background:  Reading 0303, English 0302
III.          Text:  Oral Interpretation, 11th edition, Gura and Lee
IV.          Methods of Instruction:  Any or all of the following:  class lecture, class discussion, and   individual performance readings.
V.            Course Content: 
               A.  To successfully complete this course, the student will need to demonstrate a mastery of  a variety of competencies used to study and perform differing types of literature (i.e. fiction, non-fiction, drama, poetry).  (See Section VI.)  The student will complete a minimum of 4 performances with written analyses of the literature, various homework assignments, a mid- term and a final exam.  One performance will be a capstone performance worth a higher percentage of the course grade that will be instrumental in assessing whether the student has mastered the oral interpretation/communication exit competency. 
                B.  Criteria for each performance and analysis will be handed to the student who will be    graded on how accurately they follow the criteria.  Failure to follow the criteria can mean a              lower grade and perhaps an automatic "F" for that portion of the performance.  Also time limits      will be established for each performance assignment.  Penalties in the assignment grade will be   assessed for under time or overtime performances.
                C.  Full copies of the piece of literature to be performed will be provided for the instructor along with the analysis of the literature and will be collected on the day assigned. 
               
VI.          Learning Outcomes:  As articulated and agreed to with SACS students passing this course will  demonstrate the mastery of the following exit competencies for oral communication and critical thinking skills.  In conjunction with textbook readings, classroom lectures and discussions, classroom activities, and a set of oral performances, the student will be evaluated more heavily on a  capstone oral performance.  This capstone presentation will require the demonstration of SACS exit competencies in oral communication and critical thinking skills.
                Learning Outcome 1:  The student will demonstrate knowledge of analytical skills necessary    for the oral study and performance of literature.  Performance objectives/Methods of measurement for each objective: The student will be evaluated quantitatively on the ability to analyze the content and structure of a piece of literature based on  the analyization pattern provided by the instructor.
            Learning Outcome 2:  The student will demonstrate knowledge of different aspects of the Performance of a piece of literature including the use of the body, voice, and facial     expression.
                Performance objectives/Methods of measurement for each objective:  The student will be evaluated quantitatively on the ability to use the body, voice, and facial expressions to elucidate a piece of literature for an audience to experience.               
                Learning Outcome 3:  The student will demonstrate knowledge of differing types of      literature suitable for oral performance (i.e. fiction, non-fiction, drama, poetry)  and how it reflects cultural diversity.
                Performance objectives/Methods of measurement for each objective: The student will     be evaluated on the appropriate choice of a literature selection and the ability to appropriately
                perform said selection based on the criteria provided by the instructor.  Performance objectives/Methods of measurement for each objective:  The student will be evaluated on the ability to evaluate through critical analysis the cultural characteristics and  experiences in a piece of literature.
               Learning Outcome 4:  The student will demonstrate an appreciation for and understanding of different types of literature through performance.  Performance objectives/Methods of measurement for each objective:  The student will be evaluated on his/her understanding of a piece of literature as shown through performance of said piece based on criteria selected by the instructor.  Additional Learning Outcomes:  (as determined by the instructor) SCANS Competencies:  See attached for a list of competencies related to the workplace as outlined by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

VII.         Course Requirements and grade computation:
                A.  College Requirements:  A written, comprehensive final examination, not to exceed two and  half hours in length, shall be given at the end of each semester for each course at the regularly  scheduled time.  Any exceptions to these requirements must be approved by the dean.  Other  examinations are given at the discretion of the instructor.  A student who must be absent from a  final examination should petition that instructor for permission to postpone the examination.  A student absent without permission from a final examination is graded "F".  Postponed examina tions result in a grade of incomplete.  The final exam must be taken within 120 calendar days from the end of the semester or the grade automatically becomes an "F".                 F.  Students are required to silence all electronic devices (e.g. pagers, cell phones, etc.)
when in the classrooms, laboratories, and the library.  College Academic Council, 1/2000.
                G.  San Antonio College Attendance Policy:  Regular and punctual attendance at all classes  and laboratories, day/and evenings, is required.  A student absent for any reason is responsible  for all work missed.  Both tardiness and early departure from class are forms of absenteeism. The instructor establishes the policy with regard to each.
