SAC Speech Team
Who coaches the speech team on the SAC campus?
Currently, Jolinda Ramsey is the coach of the team. Misty Popovich served as co-coach for the 2006-07 and 2005-06 seasons.

Does the SAC Speech Team compete in NPDA/CEDA/LD or Public Debate?
In the past, we have competed in Parlimentary Debate (NPDA), but are not currently involved with this type of debate. However, we do not compete in CEDA/LD or Public Debate.
What events are offered at collegiate speech tournaments?
Public Speaking Events: Informative Speaking, Persuasive Speaking, Communication Analysis, After-Dinner Speaking or (Speech to Entertain)
Limited Prep Events: Impromptu Speaking and Extemporaneous Speaking
Oral Interpretation Events: Dramatic Duo Interpretation, Prose Interpretation, Program Oral Interpretation, Poetry Interpretation, and Dramatic Interpretaion
**Interpreter’s Theatre is only offered during the Spring Semester.**
Are there scholarship opportunties available?
There are two scholarship possiblilities for speech team members. If a student is eligible for both scholarships, only one will be awarded.
Ron Lucke Scholarship-The speech coach and departmental faculty awards this scholarship based on a team members’ participation, attitude, and success.
Departmental Scholarship-The student must be a speech major and meet other requriements of this award. The application form for this scholarship can be found at (Scholarship webpage).
What are the expectations of being a speech team member?
- A student meets with the coach approximately twice a week for one-hour sessions.
- We attend about five tournaments a semester.
- Maintains at least a 2.0 overall GPA.
- Enrolls and completes at least 6 hours of class credit in the Fall and 9 hours in the Spring.
- A good work ethic and the desire to be competitive.
- Will compete in about 4 events by the time we attend the National Tournament.
Does it cost anything to be on the speech team?
Essentially, there is very little cost to being a speech team member. Team members invest in nice clothing for competition. The forensics budget from the college pays for travel costs such as hotel, registration fees and meals while at the tournament.
Where do we go for tournaments?
We travel to various two and four year colleges and universities in the state of Texas. Some of the campuses include Texas State, University of Texas in Austin, Kingwood College, Tarrant County Community College, and the University of St. Thomas. Each year we attend the Phi Rho Pi National Tournament. It takes us to beautiful places in the United States such as Los Angeles, California, Portland, Oregon, Jacksonville, Florida and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
