Course Description


This course aims at understanding and demonstrating the fundamentals of oral communication and participation in group speaking situations. The focus is on critical thinking skills, and preparing and delivering different types of speeches in a professional business setting.

Course Objectives

  1. To improve one's self-confidence and self-concept by improving communication skills-particularly those used in work situations.
  2. To foster or enhance each student's ability to present his/her ideas coherently, in an organized highly structured and time-constrained format.
  3. To improve critical thinking skills and enhance each student's ability to express himself/herself objectively, subjectively, and creatively; and understand the difference between the three.
  4. To develop an understanding and appreciation for the dynamics of the communication process.
  5. To develop an introductory level of knowledge of PowerPoint and the use of technology in public speaking.
  6. To be able to listen more critically to others and discern the various parts of a presentation.
  7. To develop an appreciation of diversity and improve on individual skills to communicate more effectively within a heterogeneous audience.
  8. The ability to develop and use supporting materials for an oral presentation.
  9. To demonstrate the ability to research a topic thoroughly and organize it into a concise and coherent presentation.
  10. The ability to deliver a variety of types of both informative and persuasive presentations in a professional extemporaneous style.
  11. At the end of the semester, the student will be able to understand the interviewing process and develop competencies as both the interviewer and interviewee.

Books may be purchased on campus or online at the SAC and/or L& M bookstore. You will also need a folder to put your outline and bibliography into for your speeches and a VHS-C tape to record your presentations.

Hardware and Software


Students experiencing the least trouble in the past had equipment which met these minimum requirements:

  • System with a Pentium II (two) or higher processor
  • A 56k or faster modem
  • Windows XP, NT operating system
  • 64 mb RAM
  • 15 mb free disk space
  • Use a current version of an Internet Browser. The following current browser versions can be downloaded free: Microsoft Internet Explorer Web Browser 6.0.2 or Netscape Communicator 7.1
  • Access to the web through IDEA, WorldNet, Earthlink, Roadrunner, DSL, or other Internet service provider
  • Mac or Linux users: equivalent of the above or better

Students who have accessed the Internet through AOL have experienced many technical difficulties.

Computers on Campus


If an Internet student's system goes down temporarily, it does not necessarily mean s/he has to drop the class. If logistics can be worked out, s/he may use computers at these locations on campus.

S/he may check the sites or call the numbers given for hours. A road map to the campus and charts of the various campus locations are here on the SAC site.

 

For Researching

    • The Learning Resource Center at SAC is designed to help students find information. The staff members there are described as "Instructor/Librarians," and they welcome questions.
      • Students will see the computers section as soon as they enter the front entrance to the library.
      • They will need a formatted 3 1/2" diskette to copy or print information from the Internet.
      • The library entrance is on the second floor of the Moody Learning Center

Tutoring


In addition to contacting the instructor, an Internet student may use the tutoring service on campus. Call the number given for hours.

  • SLAC Lab in MLC 726 -- the tutoring available covers many areas. Although the tutors accept walk-ins, people who call and set up a time get first priority. Also, tutors for certain classes are scheduled only certain hours, so it's best to call. A bill marked "Paid" for the current semester and SAC ID are required.

Some Important San Antonio College Policies

I. Absences -- "A student absent the equivalent of two weeks of instruction in a regular semester may be dropped by the instructor." Please consult the San Antonio College Catalog in general. Your attendance in this class will be based on your weekly chapter reaction papers. IF YOU MISS MORE THAN 2 WEEKLY CHAPTER ASSIGNMENTS DURING THE SEMESTER, IT WILL BE CONSIDERED EQUIVALENT TO MISSING 2 WEEKS OF SCHOOL AND YOU WILL BE DROPPED FROM THIS CLASS!!!!!!!

II. Academic Dishonesty -- The full text of the policy may be found in the "Student Code of Conduct," which is on pages 52-60 in the San Antonio College Catalog. The text reads, in part: "Students found guilty of an act of academic dishonesty may be subject to:

(1) Academic penalty including one or more of the following when not inconsistent

a. A requirement to perform additional academic work not required of other students in the course

b. A reduction in grade

c. Assignment of a grade of "F" in the course.

(2) Corrective measures including any penalty which may be imposed in a student disciplinary hearing pursuant to this Code of Conduct.
