I. Catalogue Description: This
is a laboratory course designed for students to enhance performance skills in
public speaking, oral interpretation and/or acting. The students are offered an opportunity of
activities including tournament competition, community
sponsored performances and/or organized festivals. The students are given individual attention
for preparation of performances and rehearsal is offered. This course may be repeated each semester for
a maximum of 4 semester hours credit.

instruction of performance and practice
V. Course Content: Competition with two and four year colleges and
universities in public speaking and oral interpretation events
VI. Learning Outcomes:
A.
Learning Outcome 1: The student will be able to master the skills needed
to be competitive in oral
interpretation events.
Performance
Objectives / Methods of Measurement:
1.
The student will
be able to demonstrate knowledge of finding original literature, the ability to
edit a piece of literature, and using various performance skills in preparing
for an oral interpretation event.
2.
The student will
be able to demonstrate their abilities by competing at an intercollegiate
speech tournament.
B. Learning
Outcome 2: The student will be able to master the skills
needed to be competitive in public speaking events.
Performance Objectives / Methods of Measurement:
1.
The student will
be able to demonstrate research, outlining, writing, and oral communication
skills in preparing a public speaking event.
2.
The student will
be able to demonstrate their abilities by competing at
an
intercollegiate speech tournament.
VII.
Course Requirements and Grade Computation:
A. College Requirements:
·
A written
comprehensive final examination, not to exceed three hours in length, shall be
given at the end of each semester for each course at the regularly scheduled
time. Any exceptions to these
requirements must be approved by the appropriate dean. Other examinations are given at the
discretion of the instructor.
·
A student who
must be absent from a final examination should petition that instructor for
permission to postpone the examination.
A student absent without permission from a final examination is graded
“F.” Postponed examinations result in a
grade of “I.” The final exam must be
taken within 120 calendar days from the end or the semester or the grade
automatically becomes an “F.” (San Antonio College Bulletin, Faculty Handbook –
January, 1995)
B.
Departmental Requirement:
·
A student in forensics
is required to compete in AT LEAST 4
intercollegiate tournaments during the semester.
C.
Instructor Requirements:
·
All students are
expected to meet with the instructor at least 2 hours a week for individual
practices.
·
All students are
expected to practice on their own at least 2 hours a
week.
D.
Grade Breakdown:

The grade for
this course will be determined as follows:

A.
B. Students are urged not to bring children to
either a class or lab. Minors under the
age of twelve (12) must not be left unattended on campus. (College Academic

F. Students are required to silence all
electronic devices (e.g. pagers, cellular phones, etc.) when in classrooms,
laboratories and the library. (College
Academic Council – January, 2000)
G. San Antonio College Attendance Policy: Regular and punctual attendance at all
classes and laboratories, day and/or evening, is required. A student absent for any reason is responsible
for all work missed. Both tardiness and
early departure from class are forms of absenteeism. The instructor establishes a policy with
regard to each. (see Instructor Requirements
above) Absences of each student are
recorded without exception. The counting
of absences begins on the first day of class.
A student absent the equivalent of two weeks of instruction in a 16-week
semester class may be dropped by the instructor. If a student is dropped from a class for
excessive absences, the instructor will record a grade of “W” (withdraw). It is the student’s responsibility to ensure
that the withdrawals have been submitted.
