Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a non-remedial academic support program which increases retention and productive grade rates in historically high-risk, or “gate keeper” courses.


Regularly scheduled review sessions, which are structured as informal seminars, are held three times per week. The sessions incorporate how-to-learn with what-to-learn by using methods such as discussing readings, comparing class notes, using organizational tools, and predicting test questions.
SI sessions are led by students who have successfully completed the course and have received special training. Leaders attend classes of an assigned section and act as model students.


Participation by academic departments and by students is voluntary. However, the success and acceptance of the program is evident from the fact that SI is offered by 146 institutions in 12 countries
