(revised 5/09)

In this course we will examine works of art and architectural monuments from a number of Western and non-Western cultures produced between the thirteenth century and the twentieth century.  Your understanding of the various factors that contributed to and conditioned the making of images and objects in various locations during this period will be gained from a number of sources, including your textbook (see Syllabus), internet and library research (see Museum Assignment and Research Paper), a museum visit (see Field Trip), online 'lectures,' and weekly communication with fellow students (see Listserv Discussion).

Note: to fulfill the requirements of this course, you will need to visit a public art collection.  Ideally, you will do this during the scheduled class Field Trip.  However, if you reside outside of San Antonio other arrangements can be made.

The requirements of this course presents educational, technical, and motivational challenges that differ from the traditional classroom course.  To find out if an internet course is right for you, you are encouraged to take the Internet Skills Self Test (http://www.alamo.edu/sac/online/isc/module1.htm)

Once you register for the class, you should contact me immediately by email (dschafter@alamo.edu).  This will give me the email address where I can reach you individually (off the Listserv) throughout the semester.  I will then add you to the course Listserv and give you the Listserv address where you can communicate with other students in the class during the term.  Next, you will want to review the course Syllabus for information on the required text, grading policy, and important SAC policies.
