A.  COURSE DESCRIPTION: Art History Survey I -- ARTS1303 --  explores art from the prehistoric era through the middle ages through the Gothic era, as well as the art of India, China, Japan, and the arts of the Americas and Africa. This course seeks an understanding of the expressive social, cultural, political and economic aspects of the cultures in which specific art styles and visual developments emerged. This course will also allow students to form a basic vocabulary for analyzing and understandingthe history of art.

B.  COURSE OBJECTIVES: To introduce students to the development of art in paleolithic, ancient, historic and pre-modern civilizations; to explore the meanings and purposes of ancient works of art in their cultural contexts; to generate an understanding of art as it reflects contemporary civilization and individual lives; to encourage broad appreciation and enjoyment of ancient art.

E.  REQUIREMENTS AND EVALUATION:

Required: Homework assignments as noted on the course schedule;  one 2-page (typed, double-spaced) mid-term report, topic to be discussed;
one 4-page research paper, topic to be approved by instructor (Note: a project may be substituted for the paper, to be discussed in class); periodic quizzes and final exam.  VISIT TO THE SAN ANTONIO MUSEUM OF ART IS REQUIRED.  Additional assignments, projects, and tests may be scheduled.
