2. Vocabulary and terminology:

3. Key items to remember:
    a. How do the pilgrimages and the cult of relics provide an impetus for art and architecture?  See the inset entitled "Pilgrimages and the Cult of Relics," Page 449.
    b. What are the primary elements of Romanesque architecture (see pages 448-457) that distinguish it from later Gothic architecture?  (See Chapter 18 for Gothic elements).
    c. Discuss the revival of architectural stone sculpture in terms of form and iconography.  See pages 460-462.
    d. What is the most important Romanesque iconography and why are the Crusades influential in the development of these themes?  See the discussion on pages 462-464 and the inset on page 466 on the Crusades.
    e. Examine the development of mural painting in Spain.  What is the iconographical model?  See pages 470-471.
    f. Examine manuscript illumination, especially noting the work of male and female artists in this work.  See pages 472-474 and the inset on "women and art in the Romanesque era" on page 473.
    g. What is the effect of the Norman invasion and Norman style in England?  See pages 475-476.
    h. Examine the Bayeux Tapestry and the embroidery techniques.  See page 475 and the inset on page 476.  Explain why it is an important work of art.
