CHAPTER 18 -- GOTHIC EUROPE
1. Read the chapter.

Take a look at "Earthlore Gothic Dreams" for information on Cathedral architecture, decoration, and motifs.  Examine the art at The Cloisters, the Metropolitan Museum of Art's space dedicated to medieval and Gothic art.

2. Vocabulary and terminology:
 
FLYING BUTTRESS, ROSE WINDOW, GRISAILLE,  QUATREFOIL, GOTHIC "S" CURVE,  CRENELLATED ROOFLINE.
Bourges Cathedral, France, front facade and sculpture.
3. Key items to remember:
    a. Examine the inset on page 463 on Abbot Suger and the rebuilding of Saint-Denis.  What impact does this have on the Gothic style?
    b. Influence of the philosophy known as Scholasticim on imagery in art.  See inset on page 466.
    c. Explore elements of French Gothic architecture on pages 462-469, especially the inset on the Gothic Rib-Vault on page 468 and the inset on page 469 on the Gothic Cathedral.
    d. How is the attitude of the Gothic era different from the Romanesque era?  How is this displayed in the art?  See issues throughout the chapter.
    e. What architectural and artistic elements allow the Gothic stained glass window to become possible? See page 471 and the inset on page 472.
    f. What elements of classical Greek and Roman sculpture are seen in the jamb statues and independent sculpture at Chartres?  See pages 472-473.
    g. Name several ways that the English, German, and Italian Gothic styles differ from the French.  See pages 86 to end of chapter.
