DEPARTMENT
STUDENT ART GUILD, MAY 2003

|
We boarded the Alamo Coach at SAC, with our tour guide Carlos and his father, also Carlos. Our first stop was for breakfast in Laredo. |
|
Crossing the border... well...it looked easier than it was |
|
| Next
stop: The Cuatemoc Brewery in Monterrey!!! |

|
| On Saturday, we cross the
street bordering the Macro Plaza (above left), view the fountain commemorating
the founding of the city (center), and on to MARCO, the Monterrey Contemporary
Art Museum (above right). Later that afternoon, we visited the Monterrey
Metropolitan Museum of Art (center building in the image to the left above)
which displayed a variety of local contemporary artists. Below are
the side and front of the MARCO museum. |

|
| The three images above show
the beauty of the museum itself. The exhibit in May, 2003, was Part
III, "Los espacios incomformes" (Scenes of Dissent) of the four part series,
"Siglo XX: Grandes Maestros Mexicanos." The exhibit included works
by Rufino Tamayo, Jose Luis Cuevas, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Carlos Fuentes,
Lilia Carrillo, Leonora Carrington, and Remedios Varo. A special travelling
exhibit on the second floor of the museum, "Museums for a New Millenium,"
displayed plans, drawings, photographs and models of the most important contemporary
museum today. |

|
|
| Above is the Monterrey Cathedral.
A Baroque revival complete with churriguerresque front, it is a Spanish colonial style church. It is a sharp contrast to the bold, minimalist
planes of MARCO. |
|
Left, the hard-working fund raisers of the Student Art Guild -- Valerie Tapia, Julio Borjon, Martha Jasso, and Jina Tapia; with Marleen Hoover, Faculty Sponsor. |
