Student Art Guild minutes, notes, and musings...from the Secretary

Monday, October 4, 2004

Hello, everyone! This is your Secretary/Web Master speaking...

(PLEASE READ ALL!!! I PROMISE THE NEXT ONE WILL BE SHORTER!!!)
This will be our first pseudo-newsletter of this semester, and I hope to keep them going on a more regular basis. It will help to keep you informed of what's going on whenever you can't make the meetings. However, participation is of the utmost importance. That said, here's what's been happening in September:

Student Art Guild has met 4 times, not counting the Pizza/Movie Intro meeting. In that time, we have ratified, as of Sept. 9th, a charter. On that same day, officers were elected. The following are the officers for Fall Semester '04:

President: Kirk Forster
V-President: Vanessa Barnes
Treasurer: Lindsay Gabriel
Secretary/web master: Julio Borjon
Exhibition Chairperson: Norbert Martinez
Event Chairperson: Marisol Vasquez

On to the following meetings...
There was a meeting on Sept. 16, at which we discussed making and selling calendars, which idea was soon turned into that of day planners. These planners will contain images of previous student
exhibitions. Other fundraising ideas were discussed, one being a breakfast sale. More on these in following meetings...

Also, ideas were discussed about future field trips, one which may be an overnight/day trip, another which may be for a whole weekend. More on all later...

Following two meetings were basically the same, except for a few details (Sept 23 & 30):

During both meeting, we discussed funraising events. One was that of selling breakfast at the VATC. Our first day of sales, which took place Sept. 29th, was a success. We had some profit from that sale, and are looking forward to mostly profits at our next sale. We will be having another breakfast sale on October the 6th from 8 am to 1 pm
in the gallery area of the VATC. Please feel free to come by and volunteer some time. It'll come in handy when the dividing of funds is decided.

A second idea, stemming from our food sales, is that of a movie and pizza day. We are planning to show movies on Monday the 25th, and at the same time have a pizza sale. This has been planned for 11 am to 3 pm. Once again, please volunteer for this event. Also, send suggestion for movies you would like to see. Up for consideration at
the moment: Cronos, A Nightmare Before Christmas,  a Coen Bros. Marathon, etc. So please, give us your 2 cents on this issue.

Another of our fundraising ideas discussed was the making of the planners, with several people assigned the task to look into pricing. In the meantime, everyone should take a look at the student art work in the Annual Juried Student Exhibitions. Please go to: http://www.accd.edu/sac/vat/studentshows.html.

It is asked that everyone who would like to participate in the decision making please choose 20 pieces of art (no more than 8 in color) that he or she likes, and write them down on a sheet of paper to be handed to either Ms. Hoover, or any one of the officers, who will gladly pass it to the proper person. This must be done as soon
as possible for we would like to start production soon, possibly for sale in local bookstores.

One possible use for funds was also discussed, that of going on field trips. Several places were mentioned, and the idea will be fleshed out at the meetings where we will discuss possible events to go to at such places. Some of the places mentioned: (for long trip) Louisiana, Oklahoma, Del Rio, New Mexico, Ciudad Acuña, (for short trip)
Houston, Dallas, Corpus Christi, College Station, Austin, San Marcos. If anyone has any suggestions or comments, please feel free to post. Also, be on the look out for any art related events that could be possible focal points for our trip(s).

The making of a logo for the Art Guild was also discussed. Please see the flyers in the hallways for more information, as it is a VATC student submission event. Submit your idea and you may end up seeing
your work plastered on everything from T-shirts, poster, flyers, promoted in movies, as the shape of a cloud, etc.

Well, that is all for the moment. If you have any other comments or suggestions, feel free to post and discuss to the SAC_ArtGuild. For the next update, look forward to a much shorter newsletter. I know I will.

This is Julio, over and out.

Hello, everyone! This is your secretary once more!

Last meeting, we discussed long hair on guys and some other stuff that were unimportant to the group... :-P

ANYWAY, here's the important stuff!!!

October 20: OCTOBERFEST!
The Student Art Guild and Graphic Arts Club will be working together to work on a Fun Pics Booth! This will consist of backdrops (in front?) of famous works of arts and/or graphic images with the faces cut out to take and sell pics of students in their place (confused yet?) Think carnival type photos of people sticking their faces into
works like "American Gothic" and "The Scream". Get it? Got it? Good. Now here's what we need. Show up to the next meeting or during breakfast to volunteer for this Saturday to paint the backdrops (frontdrops?) for the pieces, or to sign up for the booth on Wednesday, the 20th.

October 25: Pizza and Movie: Take 1
Student Art Guild will be presenting a couple of movies in room 120 from 11am-3pm and selling slices of Little Ceaser's Pizza. The movies up for consideration at the moment are "A Nightmare Before Christmas"
and "Cronos", for a Halloween feel. If you have any other creatively artsy films in mid, please post your ideas and/or suggestions.

Speaking of choice, the deadline is coming near on choosing your favorite student art pieces to be included in the Student Planner to be sold by the Student Art Guild. Please select from the work of arts found at:
http://www.accd.edu/sac/vat/studentshows.html

Previous posting wasn't linking. My apologies, so use that as an excuse for not making your choices at an earlier time. Deadline to make your choices: Oct 14, during the meeting. You can either post your choices or hand them over during the breakfast sale this Wednesday or at the meeting.

That's all for now,
Julio

Hey, it's me again (what do you mean who's me? Julio! D'uh!)

Next meeting will be October 14 (thurs) at 3:00 pm. All lists for individually picked student art for the Student Planner must be in by then. Go to http://www.accd.edu/sac/vat/studentshows.html and look at the works for 2004. Please choose at least 20 pieces, no more than 8 in color.

Breakfast Sales have been doing well. We just need someone to help out from 11am - 12pm. We only have 1 person currently assigned for that time and we need at least 2. In the long run, all participation will be looked at when funds are divided for group trips. Believe me when I say it's beneficial for you to help out as much as possible.

Also, we will need volunteers for our first Pizza & Movies day. we will be selling pizza and showing movies from 11 to 3 on Oct 20.

That's it for now. Laters.
Julio

Yes! Thank you for the corrections! It was brought to my attention that I had given the wrong information on one of the e-mails. Oops. Sorry. So, uhmmm, anyway, uhmmm... heh... (pulls collar, red in the face of embarrassment)

OK. Anyway, we will be needing more people to help out Wednesday, Oct. 20th at Octoberfest from 8 AM to 4 PM. Several of us, Kirk, Vanessa, Michael, Isaac, our board benafactor (can't recall his name at the moment, my appologies), and myself, came to the VATC on a Saturday to paint the backdrops for the photos, so those are nearly complete. Now we need people to hang out at our booth helping to collect money and take pictures on that day. We will have two cameras available to take pics, and so far we have the following people signed up:

Vanessa (Student Art Guild): 8-10, 12-1, 2-4
Lindsay (Student Art Guild): 9-12
and of course me (Graphic Arts Club/Student Art Guild): all day
Emily (Graphic Arts Club): 10- 12?

So, it would be nice to have more of you volunteer at some point or another. It could be fun, maybe... :-P If you see any of our members that may not be on this e-mail group, feel free to invite them to join us and help out. And let me know what hours you can help so that I can keep track. Thank you all, and see you there!

Julio

PS: It is of my opinion that the prices for the pictures should be $5. There is a different opinion that they should be $3. So maybe a compromise is in order. Maybe $4 might be a good price, or a starting rate of $5, with a drop down to $3 during the day could be be an idea. Comments anyone?

Hi, all, this is your secretary once more...

And this is the news...

Recently we have been trying out some new fundraisers, as many of you know. On Wednesday, the 20th, we held our FunPics event at Octoberfest. That didn't go so well. The group was not to be discouraged though. Pics of everyone in the Birth of Venus piece are currently up for grabs as adult pics on Ebay.

On Monday, the 25th (today) we held our first "Pizza and (uhmmmm) a Movie" event. Pizza sold well; we had to fire our movie projectionist. Well, at least the food was good.

At the meetings, we continue discussing the planners to be sold. Currently, the images are being selected from those voted on. If you didn't vote, your voice wasn't heard... so sorry.

Also discussed, setting up at a future First Friday. We are looking at maybe acquiring space for December's FF. If interested, make sure to show up for the following meetings. Also, in the meantime, Hector, one of our members, already has a space that could use a few more people for the November FF. If interested, contact him at one of our
meetings, or e-mail me and I'll contact him for you. I'm at warlock978@yahoo.com or hotmail.com, whichever you care to e-mail (or chat on).

Next Fundraiser: Wednesday, Oct. 27th Breakfast Sale. As usual, we need help in the 11-12 hour, so please feel free to volunteer.

Next Meeting: Thursday, Oct. 28th. Check the signs on Thursday to see where that will be.

OK folks, that's all there is for now. Catch you all at the end of the week once more for the news.

Julio, signing out...
