CHAPTER 3 -- EGYPT UNDER THE PHARAOHS 
1. Read the Chapter and ...

explore "Berger's World Art Treasures"-- click to examine Egyptian treasures up close!  And then, take a tour of Egypt!  and tour the Kingdoms of Kush and Nubia.   AND THEN, WRITE LIKE AN EGYPTIAN...CLICK HERE!
 

2. Vocabulary and terminology:

PREDYNASTIC, DYNASTY, PAPYRUS, PICTOGRAPHS, SARCOPHAGUS, HIEROGLYPHICS, NECROPOLIS, MASTABA, BILATERAL SYMMETRY, AXIS, FLUTED COLUMN, ENGAGED COLUMN, FACADE, HYPOSTYLE HALL, KA, OBELISKS, COLONNADE, PYRAMID, PHARAOH

3. Key items to discuss and know:
    a. Notice how the human figure is depicted in the Old Kingdom and in the 18th Dynasty.  What accounts for the differences? (See pages 64-65, and page 72). 
    b. View information about the elements of early Egyptian architecture (see pages 57-60, and the inset on page 60).
    c. Who was the real Imhotep and why was he important? (See page 57).
    d. Tomb architecture in the New Kingdom (see pages 65-71).
    e. Elements of art during reign of Akhenaton and the Amarna Period (see pages 73-75).
    f.  Compare the Great Sphinx from Gizeh (page 61) with Taharqo as Sphinx (page 77).

4. Art from text to remember:
    a. Palette of King Narmer, (see page 55 in the text).  Explain why the Palette of Narmer is so important to the development of Egyptian art.
    b. Stepped Pyramid of Djoser, (see page 58).  Discuss the architectural and material innovations see in the Stepped Pyramid.
    c. Pyramids at Gizeh, (see page 59).  Is the pyramid form an invention inspired by a religious demand or the result of a formal evolution?  Do you wonder who built the pyramids?  Examine this article from the Harvard Magazine.
    d. Menkaure and His Wife, Queen Khamerernebty, (see page 62).  Discuss the rigid formality and stereotypical gesture in this work.
    e.  Seated Scribe (Kay?), (see page 63).  Compare the relaxed physical shape of the scribe with the figure of Menkaure above.   Here's a link to more information!
    f. Fowling Scene, from the tomb of Nebamun, (see page 72).  How is this New Kingdom scene of the afterlife similar to those of the Old Kingdom?
    g. Compare the limestone portrait bust of Nefertiti, by Thutmose, (see page 74) with the portrait head of Queen Tiye, from Gurob, (see page 74).
    h. See above and on page 75, the Death Mask of Tutankhamen.

6. Write a chapter report related to the issues raised in  #3 or analyze a work of art from #4 above.

Include comment/comparison from one of the web sites above or another you have located.
