The Art of OCEANIA

1.  Read the chapter.

At the "Aboriginal Art and Culture Centre" in Australia, click on
"art gallery" to see the images, and to learn about the "dream time."

2.  Be able to define these terms:

bark painting, x-ray style, cross-hatching, 
"Moai", applique, "tapa", Aboriginal, ceremonial house, tattoo, taboo (tapu)

3.  Can you discuss these ideas and issues?

    a.  What are the differences and similarities of Asmat, Abelam, and Iatmul art (See pages 924-926 in the Gardner text).
    b.  Discuss the importance and meaning of ancestral images and mask sculpture in aboriginal art.
    c.  Examine the design and role of the men's ceremonial meeting house  (see pages 923 and 928).
    d.  Examine issues of tatooing and social status (see inset on page 933 plus text and image on page 934). 


4.  Recall this art from the text:

5.  Explore these sites on the Internet:

    b.  Examine an extraordinary presentation of Australian Aboriginal Art.
    c.  View the Downing Collection of Asmat Art.
    d.  Here is the official website of the Fiji Museum.
    e.  Visit the new museum in Paris, "Musee de Quai Branly."


6.  Write a one-page report on issues from #3 above or about one of the works of art from #4 above.  Send your report through the LISTSERV.  See Schedule for due date.
