SUMMER II 2008 SCHEDULE
1.  Monday, July 14

Send an email through the LISTSERV and introduce yourself to others in the class.  Include something about your background, your major, career goals, and why you are taking this course.  Read over the Introduction to the textbook;  this is especially important if you do not have a background in art.

2.  Week of July 14
  • Read Chapter 19, "From Gothic to Renaissance:  14th-Century Italian Art."
  • Read Chapter 20, "Piety, Passion, and Politics:  15th-Century Art in Northern Europe and Spain."
  • Read Chapter 21, "Humanism and the Allure of Antiquity: 15th-Century Italian Art."
  • Read Chapter 22, "Beauty, Science, and Spirit in Italian Art:  The High Renaissance and Mannerism."
  • Assignment due on Wednesday, July 16 by 12:00 Noon, from ONE of the above four chapters.  Send your report through the LISTSERV so that others may read it and respond.
  • Response and discussion comments due on Friday, July 18 by 12:00 Noon.  You may select what you would like to respond to from other's papers....send your comments through the LISTSERV.

3.  Week of July 21
  • Read Chapter 23, "The Age of Reformation: 16th-Century Art in Northern Europe and Spain."
  • Read Chapter 24, "Popes, Peasants, Monarchs, and Merchants:  Baroque Art."
  • VISIT THE SAN ANTONIO MUSEUM OF ART AT ANY TIME -- CLICK ON THE LINK TO SEE THEIR HOURS AND TO GET DIRECTIONS.  Your task in visiting SAMA and the McNay (see next week -- that will be a group visit) is to select  ONE WORK OF ART to write about for your final research paper.
  • Assignment due on Wednesday, July 23 by 12:00 Noon, on EITHER CHAPTER 23 OR 24.
  • Response and discussion comments due on Thursday, July 24 by 12:00 Noon.  Select ONE report to respond to or question.
  • Read Chapter 25, "Sultans, Kings, Emperors, and Colonists:  The Art of South and Southeast Asia after 1200."
  • Read Chapter 26, "From the Mongols to the Moderns:  The Art of Later China and Korea."
  • Read Chapter 27, "From the Shoguns to the Present:  The Art of Later Japan."
  • Assignment due on Friday, July 25 by 12:00 Noon, on either Chapter 25, 26, or 27.
  • Response and discussion comments due on Monday, July 28 by 12:00 Noon.

4.  Week of July 28
  • Read Chapter 28, "The Enlightenment and its Legacy: Art of the Late 18th Through the Mid-19th Century."
  • Read Chapter 29, "The Rise of Modernism:  Art of the Later 19th-Century."
  • Visit SAC on-line library resources for research tips on writing your final paper at http://www.accd.edu/sac/library/faculty/dearmond/distance/
  • Assignment due on Wednesday, July 30 by 12:00 Noon.  Select from Chapters 28 or 29.
  • VISIT TO THE MCNAY ART MUSEUM ON THURSDAY, July 31;  MEET IN THE LOBBY AT 5:00 P.M.  
  • Response and discussion comments due on Friday, August 1 by 12:00 Noon.  Select one report to respond to or question.
  • Extra credit for visiting the Blue Star Arts Complex, at 1400 South Alamo, at its "First Friday" (Friday, August 1, 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.) gallery openings, and writing about (approximately one page) one work of art from one gallery.  Extra credit paper due on Monday, August 4. 

5.  Week of August 4
  • VERY IMPORTANT -- FIRST THING MONDAY A.M., SUBMIT YOUR TOPIC FOR YOUR FINAL RESEARCH PAPER FOR APPROVAL TO mhoover@mail.accd.edu
  • Read Chapter 30, "Before and After the Conquistadors: Native Arts of the Americas After 1300."
  • Read Chapter 31, "The Flourishing of Island Cultures:  The Art of Oceania."
  • Read Chapter 32, "Traditionalism and Internationalism:  19th- and 20th-Century African Art."
  • Assignment due on Wednesday, August 6 by 12:00 Noon.  Select from Chapters 30, 31, or 32.
  • Response and discussion comments due on Friday, August 8 by 12:00 Noon.
  • Work on your final research paper over the weekend!
6.  Week of August 11
  • Read Chapter 33, "The Development of Modernist Art:  The Early 20th-Century."
  • Read Chapter 34, "From the Modern to the Postmodern and Beyond:  Art of the Later 20th-Century."  Reports due on either chapter by Tuesday, August 12 by 12:00 Noon.  No discussion comments due. 
  • Research Papers due on Wednesday, August 13 by 12:00 Noon.  SEND YOUR PAPER TO mhoover@mail.accd.edu
  • Final Exam -- Thursday, August 14 -- Watch for information posted through the LISTSERV.
