TASA Conference, Corpus Christi 2004

  April 15: Pre-Conference, Thursday

April 16-17: Conference, Friday and Saturday

In an effort to be fiscally responsive, the TASA Board of Directors has decided to reduce the number of editions of Envision to three per year. Members will now receive the newsletter before the conference in the early Spring, after the conference in the Summer, and in the Fall. Additional information may be found on the TASA website at http://www.tasart.org/ .

The theme for the 2004 TASA conference will be “PUBLIC ART: IS ANYBODY LOOKING?” The host committee, Carey Rote, Mark Anderson, Louis Katz, and Jayne Duryea, are planning a full schedule of activities for participants. These will include the Hannah lecture and the Art History presentations, demonstrations and tours of Texas A&M at Corpus Christi , Del Mar College, and Coastal Bend College , a reception at the Art Museum of South Texas , and a visit to the studio of artist, Jesus Moroles. Highlights will include a South Texas Barbeque arranged by Jayne Duryea at a Beeville ranch, and seeing the new public sculpture at Texas A&M Corpus Christi by Philadelphia artist, Robert Roesch—the biggest sculpture in Texas (and the best!). Look forward to all this and walks along the beach, and a pool or boat party. Begin to make your plans now, and be sure to remind your friends and colleagues.

" “Public Art: Is Anybody Looking?”: The theme for the next TASA conference.

The question for the conference this year is the impact of public art within a community and Corpus Christi becomes the example. The committee plans to explore all the issues that influence the selection of public art, and how the installation of works will impact the appearance and development of a city. The question is whether the results are worth the expense. A panel discussion on this issue will be held on Saturday from April 17 th from 4:00 to 5:15 p.m. Moderated by Carey Rote, Professor of Art at TAMU-CC, participants will include Bill Otton, Director of the Art Museum of South Texas , Greg Reuter, Professor of Art at TAMU-CC, Deborah Fullerton, Curator of Education at the Art Museum of South Texas , and Sam Logsdon, Professor of Music.

Conference (Friday and Saturday, April 16 and 17)

Keynote Address

A Texas native, Jesús Moroles continues to live and work in Texas , with his studio in Rockport , Texas . He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts at University of North Texas , Denton , Texas , 1978. After spending a year in Pietrasanta , Italy in 1979, he studied with Luis Jimenez, a famous figurative sculptor, before beginning his personal body of work. Critical recognition for Moroles came quickly. Moroles' most visible public sculpture is “Lapstrake” 1987, a massive 22 feet tall, 64-ton work located across from the Modern Museum of Art in New York . During the late 1980s, Moroles received significant national attention with his inclusion in the landmark exhibition, “Contemporary Hispanic Art in the United States .” Moroles' largest scale single work is the “Houston Police Officers Memorial,” dedicated in November 1992. A granite and earthen stepped pyramid surrounded by four equal inverted stepped pyramids excavated from the ground, the sculptures extend 11 feet below ground level and 11 feet above ground level, and 120 feet on a side. To date Moroles' work has been included in over 100 one-person exhibitions and 175 group exhibitions worldwide. He has lectured extensively about his work and the issues of public sculpture. We look forward to visiting his studio and welcoming him as our Keynote Speaker.

Art Patron Honorees

Dr. Robert Furgason and his wife, Gloria, have been selected to receive the Art Patrons Award for their dedicated service to the arts in the community of Corpus Christi . Over the years they have devoted tremendous effort to advancing the arts in the city. Gloria has dedicated countless volunteer hours to the Art Museum of South Texas , as well as having served on the Board of the South Texas Institute for the Arts. Dr. Furgason has enhanced the arts by merging the South Texas Institute for the Arts with the university, building the Harte Performing Arts Center, spearheading the construction of Momentum--the new entrance sculpture at the university, supporting the acquisition of the Hamlin Center space for the Department of Art, and leading the fundraising drive for the new Ricardo Legoretto building for the Art Museum of South Texas. Their legacy will impact on many future generations of South Texans. They have had a lasting impact on the development and improvement of the arts in our community.

In Memorium

It is with great sadness that the TASA Board of Directors notifies the membership of the passing of long-time member, Steve Kramer. Steve died on Friday, Aug.

15, and the funeral was Sunday, Aug. 17th. Having served on the Executive Board of TASA as the newsletter editor for four years, he resigned in 2002 after he was diagnosed with a brain tumor.

Steve was the Assistant Dean of Arts and Humanities at Austin Community College and co-hosted the Austin TASA Conference in 1997. In addition to Steve's service to TASA and his academic and administrative duties, Steve was a talented artist working in both painting and ceramics. His whimsical and creative work was well received in numerous TASA Square Foot exhibitions and widely exhibited in regional and national venues.

We will greatly miss Steve's unique contributions in all aspects of our world.

One Square Foot Exhibition

Those who plan to participate in the annual One Square Foot Exhibition at the Art Museum of South Texas need to bring their submission to the registration desk at the Radisson before 9:00 a.m. on Friday, April 16. Works may not be larger than 1' X 1' X 1'. Be sure to have the artist's name, the medium, the title, and the value are attached to the piece. Entries are limited to one piece per attendee. Artworks may be retrieved after the business meeting/lunch on Saturday.

Art History/Theory/Studio Presentations

Carey Rote and the Conference Committee have selected an interesting variety of presentations. They include:

Michael Neal Donahue from Temple College in Temple , Texas will be speaking about "The Story of the Crazy Postman: Ferdinand Cheval and his Ideal Palace ." Cheval is an unknown naive artist who dedicated 33 years of his life to creating a "dream palace" in his backyard in the small French town of Hauterives in southeastern France . Donahue will detail his personal journey to the site.

Cynthia Perkins from Del Mar College will be speaking on "A Study of the Iconography of Jusepe de Ribera's Madonna with Child and Saint Bruno ".

Kay Byfield from Northeast Texas Community College will discuss “An Artist's View of Thomas Kinkade.” Using the analysis of kitsch provided by Tomas Kulka, Byfield questions the function of Kinkade's paintings and compares them to the works of contemporary artists. This will provide opportunities to broaden our understanding of the place of art objects and kitsch within contemporary visual culture.

•The presentation by Dr. Richard Gay from TAMU-Corpus Christi is entitled "Extending Textual Narratives by Pictorial Means: Jean Colombe and Les douze perils d'enfer".

Paul Hanna Lecture
