The Department of Services for Women & Non-Traditional Students has been instrumental in assisting thousands of women in our community to overcome barriers in order
to achieve their educational goals and reach self-sufficiency.

1979-(September) Twelve member committee submits a proposal outlining the need for an             information center for women on the SAC campus.

1980-(September) Women's Center approved by the board of trustees.

1981- The Women's Center opens its doors on March 13th in the United Methodist Student             Center.

1981-(March 18th) Women's Center hosts an open house. City Councilwoman Maria Berriozabal          speaks on "Education and untapped Resources: College Re-entry Women".

1982- The Women's Center is recognized in the SAC Bulletin as the information/referral center for              returning, and prospective women students.

1985-Women's Center moves from United Methodist Student Center to Annex A.

1991- The Women's Center honors Maxine Sigman (co-founder of the center) at its I0th              anniversary celebration.

1997-A partnership is established with the League of United Latin American Citizens, Council
             # 2, and the Women's Center, to create the LULAC Rey Feo Parent/Child Scholarship              program

1997-The Adult Re-Entry Program is established to assist individuals in need of basic skills               upgrading and other areas of training in order to prepare them to re-enter college and the               workforce.

2001-The CONNECTIONS Training and Employment Program is established as part of the Adult              Re-Entry Program.

2001-(March) Women's Center 20th Anniversary Celebration featuring the Honorable Ann             Richards is held. Women's Center establishes the first endowment for women.

2002-(May) First "WE (Women Empowered) Conference designed to encourage low-income             women who wish to return to school is held.

2003-(October) CONNECTIONS Training and Employment Program earns the "Excellence             Through Innovation" Award, from the Alamo Workforce Development Board.

2004-(October) The Women's Center receives a $594,000 grant from HUD to renovate building             at 703 Howard to be named the Seguir Adelante which will provide education and training             opportunities for returning adults.

2006-(March) The Women' s Center receives the Model Program Award from the American              Association for Women in Community Colleges. (AAWCC)  

2006-(September) Nationally Recognized Women's Rights Pioneer and Journalist, Gloria               Steinem, is the keynote speaker at the Women's Center's 25th Anniversary Celebration.

2006- Structural reorganization results in Women's Center and Seguir Adelante as part of               the newly created Department of Services for Women's Non-Traditional Students.

2007-(January) Seguir Adelante grand opening is held.

2007-(August) The department receives a $597,530 grant from HUD to build the Mi CASA               in order to offer the community career advancement and self-sufficiency services.
