Curriculum & Course Listing
The Health Information Systems (HIS) cluster of Programs includes plans
leading to an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree and five Certificates of
Completion (CC) in various career fields relating to health information and
documentation.
Curriculum and course listing information can be found under each program
option listed below.

Health Information Technology (AAS)
prepares students as
a Health Information Technician (HIT) and eligibility to write the national
credentialing examination as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT).

Documentation Coding Specialist (CC)
prepares students for coding
inpatient records, hospital portion of ambulatory surgery or emergency care
and for writing the national credentialing examination to become a Certified
Coding Specialist (CCS) or Certified Coding Specialist Physician Based
(CCS-P).

Coding Specialist (CC)
prepares students for entry-level coding
in a doctor's office, clinic, or similar setting and eligibility for writing
the national credentialing examination as a Certified Coding Associate (CCA).

Health Information Specialist (CC)
prepares students for
entry-level employment in clerical positions associated with health
information in various healthcare settings.

Specialty Medical Transcriptionist (CC)
prepares student for
entry-level medical transcription
positions in various healthcare settings, such as specialty clinics or
physician offices, and for writing the national credentialing examination as
a Registered Medical Transcriptionist (RMT).

General Medical Transcriptionist (CC)
prepares students for
intermediate level medical transcription positions in various healthcare
setting, such as hospitals, contract services, and self-employment and for
writing the national credentialing examination as a Registered Medical Transcriptionist (RMT)
and, after two years experience in acute care settings, as a Certified
Medical Transcriptionist (CMT).
HIS program option have been designed to allow students easy progression from
a beginning Certificate of Completion program option to eventual completion of
an Associate Degree program option. Articulation agreements may also
provide opportunities for progression to the Baccalaureate level.
In addition, the HIS cluster of programs also offers eight elective Allied
Health courses designed to provide foundation and advance skills in
health-related fields.
