Is the Histologic Technician Program (HTP) affiliated with local clinical facilities ? 
Yes. These currently include the following: 
  • Texas Center for Infectious Disease (TCID)
  • Pathology Reference Lab (PRL)
  • Christus Santa Rosa Hospital
  • Severance & Associates/Ameripath Laboratory
  • Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC)
  • Wilford Hall Medical Center
  • Southwest Texas Methodist Hospital

What transportation responsibilities will the student have ?

All Allied Health Department students are responsible for transportation to classes and clinical sites.  Student VIA discount bus passes are available through the "Equity Center Services" located in the Norris Technical Building (NTB) Room 106. Equity Center can also be contacted at 210-531-3518.

   
Are Histologic Technician Program courses available via the internet ? 
Not  presently.
   
Are there any Histologic Technician Program courses available in the evening or weekends ?
Not presently.
   
What should I include in the one-page narrative required for the HTP application?
The one-page statement for the HTP application packet may include your reasons for applying for this program, interest in the profession, hobbies, family information or any other items that will provide information for the reviewers about yourself.
 
What immunizations or tests are required for clinical assignments?
  • Tetanus & Diphtheria (within last 10 years)
  • Tuberculosis (within last 2 years)
  • Rubella-Mumps-Measles (one immunization shot required). If born before 1957, no immunization required. 
  • At least one series for Hepatitis B vaccinations must have been given and preferably the first two immunizations.
   
What if I become injured or ill at the clinical site? 
You must enroll in the available "Student Optional Insurance" or an "Insurance Plan" of your preference (acknowledging your responsibility for healthcare) before attending clinical assignments.  Accidents are covered with your "Student Accident Insurance Plan".
     
What is the average number of students in the HTP ? 
10-15 students.
   
Can I take courses outside of the HTP? 

HTP is a TASP waived program. To maintain eligibility for the TASP waiver, students must only enroll in courses within the HTP curriculum.  Enrollment in courses outside the HTP curriculum is not recommended but each student's eligibility is evaluated on an individual basis. 

    
What is the duration for HTP completion of courses and clinical?
12 month

When are applications accepted for HTP?
Applications are accepted throughout the year.  However, entry into the HTP program and program courses begin every Fall semester.
