Prerequisite: None
An introduction to clinical laboratory science, including quality control, laboratory math, safety, basic laboratory equipment, laboratory settings, accreditation, certification, professionalism, and ethics.

MLAB 1311 Urinalysis and Body Fluids (3-2-2)
Prerequisite: None
An introduction to urinalysis and body fluid analysis, including the anatomy and physiology of the kidney, and physical, chemical and microscopic examination of urine, cerebrospinal fluid, and other body fluids.

MLAB 1227 Coagulation (2-2-1)
Prerequisite: MLAB 1201
A course in coagulation theory, procedures, and practical applications. Includes laboratory exercises which rely on commonly performed manual and semiautomated methods.

MLAB 1415 Hematology (4-3-4)
Prerequisite: MLAB 1201
Introduction to the theory and practical application of routine and special hematology procedures, both manual and automated; red blood cells and white blood cells maturation sequences, and normal and abnormal morphology and associated diseases.

PLAB 1223 Phlebotomy (2-1-3)
Prerequisite: None
Skill development in the performance of a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and universal precautions. Includes vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary skin puncture, butterfly needles and blood culture, and specimen collection on adults, children, and infants. Emphasis on infection prevention, proper patient identification, labeling of specimens and quality assurance, specimen handling, processing, and accessioning. Topics include professionalism, ethics, and medical terminology.

MLAB 1160 Clinical I (1-0-8)
Prerequisites: MLAB 1201, MLAB 1311, PLAB 1223
A health-related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills and concepts in the areas of phlebotomy and urinalysis. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional.

MLAB 1261 Clinical II (2-0-8)
Prerequisites: MLAB 1201; MLAB 1415; MLAB 1227
A health-related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills and concepts in the areas of hematology and coagulation. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional.

Prerequisite: None
A study of the taxonomy, morphology, and pathogenesis of human parasites and fungi, including the practical application of laboratory procedures.

MLAB 1335 Immunology/Serology (3-2-4)
Prerequisites: None
An introduction to the theory and application of basic immunology, including the immune response, principles of antigen-antibody reactions, and the principles of serological procedures.

MLAB 2501 Clinical Chemistry (5-4-4)
Corequisite: CHEM 1411
An introduction to the principles and procedures of various tests performed in clinical chemistry. Presents the physiological basis for the test, the principle and procedure for the test, and the clinical significance of the test results, including quality control and normal values. Also includes basic chemical laboratory technique, chemical laboratory safety, electrolytes and acid-base balance, enzymes, proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, metabolites, endocrine function, and toxicology.
