COURSE DESCRIPTION: IMED 1316 – Web Page Design I is a 3-credit college course providing an introduction to Internet web page design and related graphic design issues including mark-up languages, web sites, and browsers. This class includes instruction in the fundamentals of web page design and web site development using Adobe Dreamweaver 8.

COURSE OBJECTIVE: Identify how the Internet functions with specific attention to the World Wide Web, e-mail, and file transfer; apply design techniques in the creation and optimization of graphics and other embedded elements for use in a web page; demonstrate the use of lists, tables, frames, and forms to create interactive web pages; create, design, test, and debug a web site, and identify the benefits and limitations of various web page development software.

INSTRUCTIONAL TIME:

  • Lecture/Class activities covering the basic Internet and Web page development concepts and terminology ----- 30%
  • Laboratory/Hands-on activities to learn how to use HTML and Dreamweaver software to develop Web pages and Web sites. ----- 70%

PREREQUISITE(S):

  • ITSC 1301 – Introduction to Computers

Students must also exceed the skill levels as determined by the developmental courses listed below. Your skill levels may also be based in the Pre-TASP, TASP, SAT, or ACT scores.

ATTENDANCE POLICY: Roll WILL be taken during each class period for on-campus classes. A student not present to answer roll WILL be counted absent. It is the responsibility of a student who is late to contact the instructor at the end of class so that attendance MAY be corrected. Online classes require students participate in online activities by accessing the class web site, submitting assignments, taking quizzes, and communicating with the instructor. After the census date, a student who has accumulated the equivalent of more than two weeks’ absences may be dropped from the course. Online students who have not submitted required assignments, taken required quizzes, and have not communicated with the instructor for more than two weeks may be dropped.

After the end of the “Q” grading period, the instructor MAY issue a “W” grade. A student who is unable to continue in the class WILL be responsible for seeing that he or she is dropped. Failure to do so WILL result in an “F” grade. (Refer to the St. Philip's College 2004-2006 Catalog).

TARDY POLICY: Tardiness (on-campus class) will affect your overall performance in class.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION: Lecture (on-campus class), hands-on activities, class discussion, online class notes, and presentations.

GRADING CRITERIA:

  • Assignments/Projects - 50%
  • Quizzes - 30%
  • Final Exam/Project- 20%

GRADING SCALE:

A = 90-100
B = 80-89
C = 70-79
D = 60-69
F = 59 and below

Note: Students taking this course for their major must earn a “C” or better. Students taking this course for their major who earn a “D or F” will have to repeat this course.

MAKE-UP WORK POLICY: All assignments must be turned in on the assigned due date and time to receive full credit. Any work that is turned in after the assigned due date and time will not be accepted and you will receive a zero for that assignment. In case of an emergency, you have one (1) opportunity to turn in late work.

PLAGIARISM POLICY: If it is determined that a student has participated in a scholastically dishonest activity (cheating, plagiarism, and/or collusion), the student will receive a grade of zero for that assignment. (Refer to Page 17, Item No. 10, of the Student Policy Manual.)

SOFTWARE POLICY: Students are strictly prohibited from any unauthorized copying of software that has been purchased by the Business Information Solutions Department for use in the labs. The Department is responsible for abiding by copyright laws and will take appropriate disciplinary measures against students violating these laws.

COURSE EXPECTATIONS/REGULATIONS: Refer to the Code of Ethics at the end of the syllabus. Additional expectations may be developed for this course.

LAB/CLASSROOM POLICIES:

  1. The classroom/lab is a working environment and should be treated accordingly.
  2. Do not bring the following to class: children, other visitors, food, and/or drinks.
  3. Report machine (computer/printer) malfunctions immediately to your faculty member. Do not attempt to fix the problem yourself.
  4. Seek the approval of a faculty member before using a lab. Bowden labs are not open labs.
  5. Students are not permitted to download or install software without the approval of a faculty member.
  6. Limit Internet/e-mail usage to approved course content.
  7. During class time, turn pagers and mobile phones to vibrate/silent mode. Also, turn music players off.

BUSINESS DRESS STANDARDS: Students are encouraged to dress to fit a business environment. Avoid clothing that will detract from your professionalism. You want the attention to be on your skill rather than on what you are wearing.
