• The closure of Kelly Air Force and its aircraft maintenance depot in 2001
created challenges and unexpected opportunities for St. Philip’s College. The
Aircraft Technology Program was tasked to develop just-in-time training programs
for the displaced Kelly workers. The program coordinated and implemented
services for over 4,000 employees. Services included case management, skills
assessment, job development, job placement and referrals.
• The Aircraft Technology Program has been the “go to” program for workforce
development in the transformation of the old Kelly Air Force base to a
commercial aerospace facility, employing over 5,200 employees. The program
assisted with the assessment, training, and certification of employees for the
following companies located at Kelly USA: Boeing, Chromalloy, Lockheed Martin,
Pratt& Whitney, and Standard Aero.
• Awarded Skills Development Fund grants in excess of 2.5 million dollars from
the Texas Workforce Commission to respond to growing needs for skilled and
certified aerospace and manufacturing workers in the Alamo Area. The funding
allowed the Aircraft program to expand its capabilities beyond the traditional
Airframe and Powerplant offerings and to train workers on industry specific
qualifications.
