Teacher Certification Center

The Alternative Teacher Certification Program is a non-traditional educator preparation program for teachers who hold a Bachelor's degree or higher. The Alternative Teacher Certification Program will involve college coursework and other professional development experiences as well as intense mentoring and supervision during the candidate's first year in the role of educator.

St. Philip's College Teacher Certification Center offers certification preparation in 5 areas:
  • ESL/Generalist 4-8
  • Generalist 4-8
  • Social Studies 4-8
  • Social Studies 8-12
  • Career and Technology Education 6-12 *NEW*

Minimum Eligibility Requirements:

  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • At least 2.5 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale (any candidate who does not have a 2.5 cumulative GPA must obtain special permission for enrollment)
  • Complete an Application for Admission
  • Official passing test score report (THEA) in sealed envelope

The Application Procedure:

  • Submit a complete Application for Admission (you may obtain this online or request by phone); this application includes the following:
  1. Signed Acknowledgement Form

  2. 3 Complete Reference Forms

  3. Official Transcripts in their original, sealed envelope from all college/universities attended

  • Submit a $50.00 non-refundable application fee; ONLY MONEY ORDER, CASHIER'S CHECK, or CASH ARE ACCEPTED.
  • Submit official transcripts from ALL institutions attended.
  • Complete a Pre-Test and Information Session (by appointment)
  • THEA (Texas Higher education Assessment) Exam

Requirements to Obtain Standard Certification:

  • Satisfy Program Requirements
  • Pass Content and PPR TExES Exams
  • Satisfy the Internship Strand ( Successfully complete one year as a Teacher of Record under the ATC Program)
  • Exams taken until passed (2 yr limit with Probationary Certificate)
  • Apply for Standard Teacher Certificate
