Call To Order

Electorate to be Heard

·         Tim Quinn of Business Information Systems spoke about changes in TASP requirements.

·         Specifically, the colleges no longer state that students must read at college grade level before enrolling in college courses.

·         One of the Faculty Senators stated that many college departments set standards to insure that students are prepared to enroll in college-level courses.

·         This issue will be further discussed at a future meeting.

SPC Community to be Heard

Committee Reports

     Ceremonial Mace Update

·         Once again in Sandra Snavely’s absence, Sylvia Phillips reported on the ceremonial mace.

·         Now, the Faculty Senate must pay for the mace.

·         One of the faculty members at the Southwest Campus who had worked on the mace no longer works for the ACCD.

·         Jennifer Garland and Mary Hayes have agreed to assist in obtaining cost estimates.

     Teaching Loads Committee

·         The Teaching Loads committee is scheduled to meet at 1 p.m. November 21.

·         A rehearsal is scheduled Wednesday, November 19, at a place to be determined.

·         It was suggested that Dr. Zaragoza, President of the Southwest Campus, be invited to the November 21 meeting.

·         Information to be included in the presentation should be forwarded to either Dee Joseph or David Weaver.

     Grant Writing Committee

·         Richard Teitz wants faculty to be informed about grant writing opportunities

·         The Grant Writing Committee is considering the preparation of a spreadsheet including amounts of grants and deadlines for submission.

·         The Faculty Senate feels the faculty should be given some form of compensation for working on grants.

High Cost of Color Copies

·         More information is to be gathered about this issue.

Window for Faculty at the Registration and Bursar’s Offices

·         Faculty have expressed an interest in having a window specifically for faculty to add and drop students from classes and to pick up paychecks or pay for parking passes.

·         Dr. Crow, Dean of Records and Registration, agreed to tell his department about the faculty’s request.

·         One Senator stated that Dr. Lynn Hills-Tatem, former Vice President of Student Affairs, felt that students should come first.

·         Since the faculty’s proposal, two events have occurred which reduce the need for separate windows.

·         First, Dr. Byrd has now stated that faculty may use the Faculty Web to withdraw students from classes.  There is no longer a need for faculty to complete the paper withdrawal slips.

·         Second, secretaries now collect paychecks for full-time faculty.

·         Senators still feel the wait in line for parking decals is too long the week prior to fall semester.

·         At a future Faculty Senate meeting, senators will consider presenting a motion to ask for a separate line at the bursar’s office for faculty to purchase parking decals the week prior to fall semester.

     Absence of Senators

·         The Faculty Senate Constitution states that if a Senator misses more than three meetings, that Senator is no longer eligible to serve.

·         Dee wonders if this clause needs to be revised and has charged the Constitution Committee with examining this policy.

     Meeting Time

·         Dee has tasked the Corresponding Secretary with composing a letter about the official day and time when the Faculty Senate will meet during the 2003-2004 Academic Year.

New Procedure for Faculty Senate Meetings

·         The Faculty Senate is attempting to conduct its meetings in one hour.  To assist us in achieving this goal, we have decided to ask committees and individuals to notify either Dee Joseph or Sylvia Phillips if they are interested in presenting reports at the meetings.  Committees are also encouraged to submit written reports for distribution at the meeting.

·         It is hoped that these revisions will streamline Faculty Senate meetings.

     Chancellor’s Reception

·         Donna Laird, Chair of the Hospitality Committee, obtained price quotes for the upcoming Chancellor’s Reception, scheduled for Thursday, November 21, from 2 to 3 p.m. in Gallery 100.

·         Gallery 100 contains approximately 50 chairs.

·         Sylvia Phillips has agreed to contact Ruben Guerrero of Media Services for videography.

·         The estimated cost of the Chancellor’s Reception is $290 for the refreshments and $50 for the decorations, equaling a total of $440.

     Faculty Senate Unit Plan

·         Dee Joseph is currently in the process of completing the Faculty Senate Strategic Planning Unit Plan for 2004 to 2006.

     Textbook Advisory Committee

·         Senators are concerned that this committee lacks cultural and gender diversity.
