Call To Order

 

·         The meeting was called to order at 1:30 pm.

 

Electorate to be Heard

 

·         There was no electorate to be heard.

 

SPC Community to be Heard

 

·         There was no one to be heard.

 

Approval and Correction of Minutes

 

·         Faculty Senators said that they did not receive the minutes from the November 6 meeting via email.  Sylvia Phillips agreed to email them before the January meeting.

 

 

Treasurer’s Report

 

·        Sandra Snavely reported that we spent $202 for the Chancellor’s Reception  and that a total of $237.92 was spent in November. The treasury currently has $1262.08.

·         Dee told us that we must each contribute two dollars for the chancellor’s tie, which, she reported, he has enjoyed wearing.

·         While discussing the chancellor’s reception, Dee stated that the chancellor enjoyed visiting with us.  She also said that the chancellor attended the Greater Chamber of Commerce Reception held December 3.

 

 

Old Business

 

Committee Reports

 

     Ceremonial Mace Update

 

·         The stand for the ceremonial mace is now available at the SPC Main Campus, but the medallion still needs to be worked on.

·         Jennifer Garland and Mary Hayes spoke with people about finishing the mace.

 

     Status of Step Increases

 

·         The chancellor has agreed to try to sell the board on a step increase.

·         The health insurance increase has left a $2.3 million deficit in the ACCD budget.

·         There is a proposal to ask each college president to contribute $1.891% for a step increase.

·         All Faculty are encouraged to attend the Budget and Committee District meeting to be held Friday, December 12.

·         If the step increase is approved, it will only apply for the spring semester, not for the fall and spring.

 

Higher Cost of Color Copies

 

·         This item was tabled.

 

New Business

 

     Employee Development Day

 

·         The Employee Development Day Committee needs a faculty senator from each college to participate in a district task force designed to improve Employee Development Day.

·         Ellie Seiferth has agreed to serve as our representative, and Sandra Snavely has agreed to serve as an alternate.

 

 

     Report from Sandra Snavely

 

·         Sandra Snavely said a committee was formed to assess textbook operations.

·         Due to storage concerns, the Bookstore does not want books carried over from semester to semester.

·         Students do not receive much money back for their books.

·         St. Philip’s contract with Texas Books will continue for five to six more years.

·         Faculty are concerned that the bookstore is not offering faculty the best possible service.

 

     Teaching Loads Presentation

 

·         The Teaching Loads Presentation is scheduled for Friday, December 5, 2003, at 1:00 pm in Gallery 100, Watson Fine Arts Center.

·         Faculty are concerned that there is an uneven distribution of course loads in Arts and Sciences and Applied Sciences.

·         At other ACCD colleges, the course load is 15, while it is 24 here.

 

 

Closed Session

 

·         The Faculty Senate went into closed session at 2:17 p.m.

 

Adjournment

 

·         The Faculty Senate reconvened the open session and adjourned at 2:24 pm.
