Master Teacher Certification
The Master Teacher Certification Program is designed to provide quality learning
experiences for new and experienced faculty members to actively engage in
reflective and creative exercises and dialogs to improve their own teaching.
The certification program includes six modules based on the League for Innovation’s
Getting Results program
(http://www.league.org/gettingresults)
Each module includes activities and discussions, most of which are completed
online within a Blackboard Vista course. Faculty members from different
disciplines will facilitate the activities and discussions. Face-to-face sessions are held to bring
participants together for discussions.
Master Teacher Program Modules (Online)
Module 1 - Creating a Community of Learners
Creating a community of learners is the foundation of effective teaching. In this course module, you will explore characteristics of learners that make them unique and diverse individuals, and discover how to create a physical, social, and psychological climate conducive to learning.
Module II - Planning for Outcomes
Learning outcomes define the purpose of your course, guide you in developing appropriate learning experiences for your students, and play a major role in assessment. This module will help you design a course that focuses on real-life outcomes.
Module III - Active Teaching and Learning
Recent research indicates that students who actively interact with a subject learn far more than those who passively take in information. In this session, you will learn several strategies for engaging your students in active learning.
Module IV - Moving Beyond the Classroom
While the classroom may be a great place to learn theory, it's not always the best place to learn workplace skills and the knowledge necessary for a career in science and technology. In this module, you will learn many ways to incorporate community and industry resources into your course: guest speakers, site visits, internships, and other potential student activities.
Module V - Teaching with Technology
Technology is changing education in two ways: first, by offering new resources to engage students in learning, and second, by giving them an opportunity to learn about new technological fields, leading to jobs and to a greater understanding of how these fields affect the world. In this module, you will examine a variety of technologies that support teaching and learning, focusing on the impact of technology on the learner.
Module VI - Assessing Teaching and Learning
The best assessments also serve as learning opportunities for students. In this session, you will learn techniques for gathering data on the teaching and learning in your classroom that will help you assess both your students' learning and your own teaching.
Lessons Learned Report
At the end of program, you will be asked to submit a Lessons Learned Report with
responses to questions about your experience in the training program, about skills you learned
in developing curriculum and assessment strategies and about changes you plan to make in the way
you approach teaching.
