SPC Receives $10,000 Donation from Cowboy Breakfast Foundation

The highlight of the recent Tourism, Hospitality and Culinary Arts Cowboy Breakfast reception at St. Philip’s College’s Upper Deck Restaurant was the presentation of a $10,000 check from the Cowboy Breakfast Foundation to fund scholarships for study in the hospitality professions at the college.
The program included welcome, introductory and closing remarks by St. Philip’s College President Dr. Adena Williams Loston and desserts prepared by Culinary Arts program students. SPC Completes Dedication Ceremony for Three New Buildings

Three new buildings for 10,000 college students in the San Antonio area were opened to the public for the first time during a dedication ceremony today at the Alamo Colleges-- St. Philip’s College Martin Luther King Campus.
“The gateways to a lifetime of learning, opportunities and choices await our students,” St. Philip’s College President Dr. Adena Williams Loston told the dedication audience as she gestured toward the new buildings. “These two new Centers-- Health Sciences and Learning Resources are connected in spirit and mission with the new Welcome Center that greets all students in one place, serving their multiple needs from admission and testing to graduation and transfer to other colleges and universities,” Dr. Loston said.

The $50,000 grant from HEB that will fund student scholarships at St. Philip's College reflects the partnership that has existed between the college and the grocery company over the years, both St. Philip’s College President Dr. Adena Williams Loston and HEB Public Affairs Director Dya Campos explained in remarks during the ceremony.
“What would any program be without the support of the business community?” Dr. Loston told the dedication ceremony audience. “Our college is honored to accept this award on behalf of our students,” said Dr. Loston. “HEB made this commitment to boost the retention and graduation rates of students who pursue their academic dreams at St. Philip’s College,” “Scholarship recipients will be required to engage in community service and to participate in programs on the college’s campuses that are related to their studies,” Dr. Loston said.
Graduation Ceremony Features Honorary Degree Presentation

St. Philip’s College spring 2009 graduation ceremony at Municipal Auditorium featured an honorary degree presentation followed by an evening of tribute to more than 375 students who walked the stage to accept their diplomas.
The ceremony was hosted by Alamo Colleges--St. Philip’s College President Dr. Adena Williams Loston and attended by Alamo Colleges Chancellor Dr. Bruce H. Leslie. The College presented an honorary degree to Ruth Jones McClendon, Texas State Representative, District 120. Ruth Jones McClendon also served as the guest speaker during the college’s 121st commencement program.

St. Philip’s College President Dr. Adena Williams Loston (center) was inducted into the San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame when the Hall of Fame members observed their 2009 Induction ceremony and 25th Anniversary celebration March 28, 2009 at Pearl Stable. Co-presenters of the honor for Dr. Loston were Dr. Jacqueline O. Dansby (left) and Reba Malone (right). Dr. Dansby is president of the San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame board of directors. Malone is director at large and chair of the 25th anniversary celebration.
SPC's Inaugural Scholarship Golf Tournament '09

St. Philip’s College hosted its Inaugural Scholarship Golf Tournament on March 3 at Pecan Valley Golf Club. Proceeds from the goodwill event will benefit student scholarships at St. Philip’s College.
On March 1 St. Philip’s College celebrated 111 years of helping people attain their educational dreams. St. Philip’s enrollment is more than 10,000 credit students and 5,000 non-credit or continuing education students. More than 70-percent of those students rely on scholarships or financial aid to achieve their educational dreams. Access to college financial resources is now more challenging, and all funds raised from this scholarship golf tournament will help.

First Honorary Degree Awarded During 120th St. Philip's College Graduation

St. Philip’s College conferred 1,033 degrees and certificates during its 120th Commencement Ceremony Dec. 12 at Municipal Auditorium.
While graduating students totaled almost 300 with 145 faculty members and more than 3,000 guests and family members in attendance, the historic ceremonial first for the 110-year-old College was the posthumous award of an Honorary Associate of Arts Degree to Rev. G. Richard Thayer, III.
St. Philip's College President Delivers Keynote Speech for 2008 City South Leadership Academy Graduation Ceremony

St. Philip’s College President Dr. Adena Williams Loston delivered the keynote address during the South San Antonio Chamber of Commerce’s 2008 City South Leadership graduation ceremony.
The graduation ceremony was the pinnacle of a nine-month leadership program. During the leadership training classes called an Academy Class the participants studied the class theme of Converting Potential Into Progress as they studied the dynamics of South San Antonio. The class also committed to aiding the Chamber in building stronger ties with schools, neighborhoods and churches in its service area---which includes St. Philip’s College. Working together the Class also raised enough money to fund seven $1,000 civics-based scholarships for college-bound seniors from Southside San Antonio high schools.
National Alliance of Black School Educators Honors St. Philip's College President

The nation’s premier association of Black educators honored St. Philip’s College President Dr. Adena Williams Loston with the National Alliance of Black School Educators’ W.E.B. Du Bois Higher Education Award Nov. 22 during the Dr. Deborah Partridge Wolfe Annual President’s Reception and Awards Banquet in Atlanta.
William Edward Burghardt Du Bois (PRON: DEW-BWHAH) was an American civil rights activist and a founder of the NAACP. The W.E.B. Du Bois Higher Education Award is bestowed to individuals or organizations that promote or advocate higher education for African-Americans. The guest speaker during the Du Bois Award ceremony for Dr. Loston was Ambassador Andrew Young.

First Presidential Scholarship under College’s new leadership empowers students to serve others

Three students with 4.0 grade point averages, individual histories of community service and commitments to involve themselves in leadership and community engagement activities were awarded the St. Philip’s College Presidential Scholarship. The three inaugural recipients of the St. Philip’s College President’s Scholarship are (from left of St. Philip’s College President Dr. Adena Williams Loston) Thomas Espinosa; Ava Delgado; and Jana Penniston.
“You embodied at the highest level the essence of what it means to earn and achieve a Presidential Scholarship,” St. Philip’s College President Dr. Adena Williams Loston outlined for her audience and the first three recipients of her College’s scholarship program. “This is one of our College’s highest honors, one in which I give personal attention,” said Dr. Loston. “You agree to serve our community as described in your application packet and to share your experiences with me personally,” Dr. Loston said. “I look forward to our meeting, to answer your questions, and to provide you with mentoring support. There is no doubt that I will learn much from you as well,” said Dr. Loston.

St. Philip's College President Dr. Adena Williams Loston was inducted into the Rotary Club of San Antonio Oct. 29 at the Bright Shawl.
“She was a fabulous selection,” said Rotary Club of San Antonio President, Patrick Tobin. “We are proud to have her join our club,” he said. “She is an example of selfless leadership, service and helping others make their dreams real,” Tobin said. “We need more members like her.”
Dr. Loston joins a diverse cross-section of business and community leaders in San Antonio who take an active role in their communities while greatly enriching their personal and professional lives.
Sorority Inducts St. Philip's College President Into its Hall of Fame

St. Philip's College President Dr. Adena Williams Loston was one of six persons inducted into the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa Inc., Educator's Hall of Fame during the educational sorority's 16th annual banquet May 23 at the San Antonio Airport Hilton Hotel.
The audience of 200 included two tables of Alamo Community College faculty, staff and administrators. Dr. Loston's award features shooting stars and a lamp of knowledge. Hall of Fame alumni with SPC connections include Olga Samples Davis (1997); Dr. Dollie Hudspeth (2001); Dr. Gregory Hudspeth (2001); Dr. Angie Runnels (2002) Dr. William Davis (2005) and Horace James Franklin (2008).
"We had a very good Hall of Fame evening," the sorority's Gamma Tau Chapter President Anita O'Neal said. "First and foremost our sorority members think of Dr. Loston as a leader," said O'Neal. "She is a college president. Her resume contains contributions and leadership skills that stand out. It was my pleasure to see her and thank her for her contributions," said O'Neal.

St. Philip's College Will Award Degrees in New High-Tech, High-Wage Academy

St. Philip’s College begins teaching high school juniors and seniors in a new Manufacturing, Engineering and Technology academy at Sam Houston High School, said SPC President Dr. Adena Williams Loston during a press conference at the high school May 30.
As the new Manufacturing, Engineering and Technology academy graduates students, those graduates will come away with a college diploma and money from experience in high-tech, high-paying fields.
“St. Philip’s College is right here in the community,” said SPC President Dr. Adena Williams Loston. “We have every expectation that when students graduate, we would award the two-year degree from St. Philip’s College,” said Dr. Loston.

St. Philip's College Celebrates Founding Church's Anniversary

The founding church of St. Philip’s College celebrated its 113th anniversary on Sunday, May 4th, 2008. St. Philip's Episcopal Church titled the event, “United In Christ 1895-2008”. The service included a sermon by the Archdeacon Milton Black and a family picnic.
St. Philip’s College President, Dr. Adena Williams Loston, presented a plaque to the church honoring the anniversary. The church established the college in 1898. On March 1st, 2007, St. Philip’s College celebrated its 110th anniversary.
St. Philip's College Recognized During Naming of New Science and Engineering Academy

St. Philip’s College was honored for its strong commitment to educating underserved students in the fields of math, science and engineering during a news conference and naming ceremony. The ceremony was hosted by the School of Excellence in Education. It asked St. Philip’s College to be its partner for its new science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) academy which will offer a rigorous curriculum for high school students and allow them to earn college credit from St. Philip’s while still in high school. “St. Philip’s College is proud to be a partner in this incredible program,” said Dr. Adena Williams Loston, president of St. Philip’s College.

Dr. Adena Williams Loston Addresses Episcopal Diocese of West Texas

On behalf of St. Philip’s College and St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, Dr. Adena Williams Loston delivered a speech at the 104th Council Meeting of the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas at Municipal Auditorium. Her presentation included a historical overview explaining how the College was founded by the Church on March 1, 1898 and that St. Philip’s College celebrated its 110th anniversary on March 1, 2008.
St. Philip's College Receives Six-Figure Grant From Port San Antonio

San Antonio's aerospace industry got a great liftoff. This week, St. Philip's College received a grant worth $139,000 from Port San Antonio, the aerospace and industrial complex located at the former Kelly Air Force Base.
The grant awarded to St. Philip's will be used to train employees for the maintenance, repair and overhaul of airplanes. This grant targets employees who primarily work for Chromalloy, Lockheed Martin and Standard Aero.
For nearly twenty years, the aircraft technology program at St. Philip's College's Southwest Campus has been a pipeline for skilled labor in San Antonio's aerospace industry. Many of St. Philip's graduates are now employed by various companies in the aerospace community.
