Women in Non Traditional Occupations
St. Philip’s College-Student Organization: Women In Non
Traditional Occupations (WINTO)
(Nontraditional is the term used to describe any occupation in which women or men comprise 25% or less of total employment.)
Statement of Purpose:
Provide a variety of services and activities for students enrolled in programs
nontraditional for their gender in an effort to improve our retention and
graduation rates; to inform, recruit, and help student's succeed as they work
towards their non-traditional career goals and helping them to overcome the
obstacles to entering a career in a historically male-dominated field; provide
leadership opportunities; meet and network with employers, business owners in
nontraditional occupations to make a smooth transition from the classroom into
the workplace.
Statement of Vision:
Ensure that every female student enrolled in nontraditional occupations is
helped to realize their capability for learning, raise their qualifications and
follow pathways tailored to their aptitudes and aspirations. We aim to provide a
ticket to successful adult and working life.
The advantages of nontraditional employment: higher wages, better benefits, physical challenges,
self-sufficiency - clearly outweigh the disadvantages for many women.
The U.S. Department of Labor Women's Bureau has a long history of encouraging women to
pursue jobs with good pay and benefits. Many of these jobs are in nontraditional occupations
(or NTO) for women. In the early 1990s, Congress passed important legislation to help women
increase their earning capacity and self-sufficiency via entrance into
nontraditional work. In 1991 the Nontraditional Employment for Women (NEW) Act
was passed, requiring all states to increase the number of females trained in NTOs.
